02.02 HMS Challenger Journal of a Scientist—Activity
Day One:
July 24, 1870 it was a nice July day the sun was shining bright and the waves were low.
One of the tools would use aboard the HMS Challenger would be A dredge took samples along the surface of the seafloor while being dragged across the bottom. The Challenger dredges were between 3 and 5 feet in width and were just metal nets shaped into bags. A piece of tightly woven cloth in the bottom of the bag trapped small animals and samples of mud. The swabs, or "tangles," attached to the bottom of the dredge were standard Navy-issue mops that were very good at sweeping up smaller organisms.
Day Two:
November 20, 1871 it probably was one of the worst days of this trip the seas were up to 10 feet. I got sea sick.
The activity I would do is fishing. I would read books and telling stories. I would play board games, cards, write letter, walk around the boat, and play instruments. One meal we would have on the boat would be fish with rice. I would not like being onboard the ship for such an extended period of time because I would want to be able to walk for a while not just around and around the boat. I would miss walking on a flat surface. I would miss being around a lot of people. I would miss being around my love ones and friends.
Day Three:
February 23, 1872 it was a good probably one of the best days on that ship. There was a clear sky it was a beautiful sunny day.
Smallpox. I have a fever of 104; my body is covered with small, raised bumps. Almost everyone in steerage has it because we're in such closed quarters down here. Many people have died already. Only a few besides me are still alive. There is nothing I can take. I'm just covered with blankets. If I were home, father would bring ice from the ice house and put it in the bed with me to break my fever. They have been throwing the dead overboard to keep the disease from spreading further.
