In the fields of emergency services, sleep patterns while on shift are often irregular. The lack of sleep, or regular sleep, can be a factor in other health problems, and can greatly decrease performance on the job. Interrupted sleep, or sleep fragmentation, is a common occurrence due to the nature of shift work, and the nature of emergency response requests. Shifts can vary in nature, and the two that will be focused on in this project is the “48/96” schedule (48 hours on shift, and 96 hours off shift), and the “Berkley” schedule (24 hours on, 24 hours off, 24 hours on, 24 hours off, 24 hours on, 4 days off). Some departments allow “safety naps” or prophylactic napping on shift during the day to help better rest personnel in preparation for calls throughout the night. This project will determine the effects of sleep fragmentation, and the effects of prophylactic sleeping periods, on personnel from the West Peculiar Fire Protection District (WPFPD) and Miami County Emergency Medical Services (MCEMS).…

The health dangers imposed on paramedics are daunting when observed from the outsider’s perspective. They have constant exposure to contagious and infectious diseases from their patients or needles that may be haphazardly placed. Infectious diseases are especially dangerous for paramedics because they receive patients at the peak of the infection instead of through the treatment process, they are also the individuals who are least protected against the possibility of infection because they lack the time and proper equipment to ensure quarantine. Patient and paramedic interaction is an important indicator of exposure risks since many times paramedics must carry patients from emergency situations; as a result they have physical contact with their patients as opposed to nurses and doctors who only get exposure through secondary contact (Boyd 2003). Paramedics are also exposed to numerous chemicals that could cause burns or…

Paramedics work as independent and autonomous semi health care professionals within the Australian health care system, both within the rural and urban environments. Firstly with the ever evolving and expanding health care environment there has been a need to move from vocational training within ambulance centers to a university based undergraduate education system. Secondly, with the changing nature of a paramedics role and expectations from the community, paramedics are quickly being considered and developed into a health care professional. Thirdly paramedics who continue to train and engage in professional development while studying and on the job will have a direct and positive impact on patient outcomes. Furthermore having the ability to work independently and autonomously will allow for the continued development of the paramedic well into and beyond the 21st century. One of the most prominent aspects of nurses’ lives that are detrimentally impacted by working 12-hour shifts is their sleep. Research shows that extended work schedules and sustained shift work, such as that seen in 12-hour shifts, can interfere with nurses’ abilities to achieve adequate sleep by reducing the number of hours for physical and cognitive recovery and the number of hours that can be devoted to sleeping between shifts (Geiger-Brown et al., 2011; Geiger-Brown et al., 2012). Geiger-Brown et al. (2012) found that on average nurses working consecutive 12-hour shifts were sleeping less than six hours per night and were experiencing progressive increases in their reported…
