During an eye exam, I asked my eye doctor what he loves most about his job. What struck me the most was what he described to be “the ability to alleviate worry”. According to him, the best part about his work wasn’t necessarily curing someone, but rather making them feel better. This ability is what I want most out of becoming an EMT. I want to be the one on the ground beside a patient telling them they’ll be fine. Yes, I want to save lives, but I also want to empathize with people and assuage their fears. I can only imagine the experience and worldliness I’d gain from treating people, and I look forward to learning more about those in need.
The other reason I want to be an EMT is that I want real, in person experience with patients. I like the idea of making an impact with my own hands, of building skills that I can actually use. And, over the years, I hope to continually improve. This ability to practice and perfect my craft would make being an EMT both dynamic and interesting.

To me, the potentially life changing experience that comes with emergency calls and saving lives is priceless. I also look forward to being part of the HERO team and family. In high school I spent countless hours, far more than the number I actually spent on school, on studying and working for my school’s Science Olympiad team. I loved having a group of likeminded people working with me towards the shared goal of winning nationals, and found some of my closest friends there, including people still in high school, and people about to graduate college. I was on the team from sophomore through senior year, and I loved both meeting new recruits and getting to know old members better. I hope to find something similar at HERO while I work with the team to save lives at
