Having a Well Deserved Break Stress will always be present at work, regardless of what type of industry you …show more content…
I was working in administration in the health care industry. I realize this is a very high pace, ever changing field, but I wasn’t exactly on the front lines. The schedule was a rough one to begin with, consulting with 12 hour shifts. Colorado law states that employees shall be entitled to an uninterrupted and 'duty free ' meal period of at least a thirty minute duration when the scheduled work shift exceeds five consecutive hours of work (Colorado Department of Labor & Employment). We were only allowed a half hour maximum lunch before needing to return. This was difficult because that’s such a short break comparing to the length of the shift, but I learned to adjust. As I continued to work there, the responsibilities kept piling on top of me to the point where it wasn’t easy for me to manage by myself. It started getting to the point where my boss would ask me to do stuff while I was on lunch. I noticed that my attitude really started to change while I was at work. I wasn’t happy, and I started to have that sense of dread driving in every morning. It was a very demanding job, and I never seemed to get any sort of break from it. This type of work environment really starts to take a toll on a person, mentally and physically (Hall, 2013). This also leads to poorer performance while on the job, which my boss was not happy with. You really start to struggle to find anything positive when you’re in this kind of position.
Having Respect for Your Boss is Important As time went on, I really did lose all respect for my boss. I was trying desperately to find other work, but it wasn’t going my way. It’s really hard to complete the simplest things, when they are assigned to you by someone who you don’t respect. I am much happier to do a difficult task for someone I respect, than to a simply one for someone who I don’t respect. My boss started to realize this as well, which created these awkward tensions whenever we had to interact with one another. Patients can sense this kind of stuff, and it even came up in some monthly patient reviews that the employees seemed drained.
