EXAMPLE ESSAY
February 20, 2013 Effects of the Tumbling Towers
A major turning point in the country’s recent history was the unfortunate events that occurred in New York and Washington on September 11th, 2001. The terrorist attacks have sparked many changes in the lives and morale of citizens in the United States of America. This paper has examined how the attacks contributed to different factors, such as the new airport security, the naivety of Americans, and the hate crimes on immigrants. First after the 9/11 attacks, airlines in the United States experienced a dramatic increase in activity for security purposes. Travelers must check in at least two hours before their flight takes off. There are restrictions on what travelers can and cannot bring. Liquids have to be a certain size and placed in clear, sealed containers. No food or bottled water is allowed through security. Passengers are selected at random for more intense screenings. Over the decade, airport security has introduced new equipment, thus creating longer lines.Today, the lines move a little faster, mostly because travelers have become accustomed to the post 9/11 restrictions. …show more content…
Secondly, after 9/11, many Americans felt an understandable hatred for the terrorists and had an urge to strike back at the culprits with all our military force.
But some Americans viewed 9/11 as a license to kill and to act without reason. President Bush, for example, issued orders for the assassination of terrorist leaders such as Osama bin Laden. Another example of our naivety was instead of focusing all our energy on capturing the people responsible of 9/11, we attacked Afghanistan, killing not only soldiers but also civilians; yet there was no evidence that Iraq had anything to do with the attack of the twin towers. The resulting mind set lead the United States of America into an unnecessary war against
Iraq. Lastly, Hate crimes in the United States against immigrants have increased. Some Americans responded to the September 11 terrorist attacks with fear, anger, as well as a growing prejudice for immigrants, especially against people who were, or appeared to be, from the Middle East. A few years ago an instance occurred in Wisconsin against a Muslim place to worship where a shooting took place. Also, the presence of Muslims or middle eastern ethnicity exposed a feeling of unease in Americans. For instance, Americans who traveled on buses or planes carrying Muslims have experienced feelings of discomfort and panic. Hate crimes have happened thousands of times in the past decade, and reports have shown no decrease since the attacks. Muslims have been discriminated against in various ways, for instance verbally, physically, or mentally. The 9/11 attacks on September 21, 2001 caused for drastic changes in the security and psychological mindset of the United States. Airport security has taken into account new customs to ensure safety on airplanes. Americans have shown irrational thoughts on the middle east, including the president, which has caused nothing but war and money. Lastly, Americans have developed hate crimes against Muslims or others who show characteristics of people from the Middle East.
They were positive effects of the terrorist attacks, however, Americans today show that the negative effects have not dissipated in the past twelve years.
