after the attacks and extending the end of it to November. Along with the debt the U.S. had, the recession, the cost for cleanup and repair is another example of the impact the attack had on the United States, economically. The replacement of the buildings destroyed is nearly $4.5 billion. The cleanup was $1.3 billion. Other costs of things such as loss in wages, loss in insurance agencies, and federal emergency funds add up to nearly $100 billion.
A political impact the attacks had on the United States is all the military campaign, known as the “War on Terror.” This term coined by U.S.
President George W. Bush on September 20th, 2001. This is negative because it’s done nothing significant but be used as an excuse to justify invading Iraq. The “War on Terror” may even be considered an act of terrorism itself being that the interrogation systems used such as Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib being considered immoral by may. The use of torture, abuse, and weapons makes the United States seem no better than the apparent terrorists we want to find. Another political impact includes the attempt to enhance security. The Patriot Act was signed into law to help “obstruct” terrorism. But there’s a difference between enhancing security and taking away individual rights. The Patriot Act gives the government the right to have surveillance over the United States citizens. This includes being able to search telephone, e-mail, and financial records without a court order; and having the access to business records, including library and financial records. The idea of taking certain measures to ensure the nation’s safety is important, but not if it invades people’s
privacy.
Socially, the impact of 9/11 continues to affect our society. Immediately after the attacks, there was an increase of hate crimes and discrimination towards those of the Muslim faith or those that fit the idea of what a terrorist apparently looks like. Examples of this hate being murdered, robbed, spat at and many other examples of cruel treatment. Even 15 years later this continues to be a problem. The 9/11 attack is used as justification for the dehumanizing treatment towards Muslims. Another social impact is the lack of trust and faith the United States citizens have for the government. Many conspiracy theories about how the attack was an inside job. These theories left some to see the government as untrustworthy. Polls and statistics show only 1 in 5 citizens completely trust or mostly trust the U.S. government. Not solely based off of the conspiracy theories either. In conclusion, 9/11 left behind a negative trail on this country. Massive debt, lack of trust in the government, inhumane treatment of other human beings. Economically, a load of debt from cleanup and extension on the 2001 recession. Politically, controversial military campaigns and security measures taken that invade citizens’ privacy. Socially, mass discrimination towards Muslims or anyone who resembles those that were responsible for the attack and suspicion towards our government. The terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001 had an unfavorable and significant impact on the United States.
