The manipulation of the media during war times has been used for many years. In most cases during times of war, or uncertainty people get a sense of patriotism and want to support the cause any way possible. This sense of patriotism is channeled strategically with the manipulation of the media. Douglas Kellner proves this in his work called, “9/11, spectacles of terror, and media manipulation(Kellner).” In this piece Kellner shows how both the Jihadist and the Bush Administration manipulated the media to portray their enemy. The Jihadist used social media and the internet to recruit and gain support they did this by portraying the western world as terrible sinful people. The Bush administration used the events of 9/11 unite the country against terrorist with the use of the global news. According to Kellner, Bush used the internet as well as popular media outlets to influence the US and the rest of the world to push his political agenda. Kellner’s overarching theme of his article was, the media is manipulated in times of war to gain support of the public people(Kellner). April Eisman dives deeper into the media that surround 9/11, in her article “The media of manipulation: patriotism and propaganda – mainstream news in the United States in the weeks following September 11(Eisman).” In Eisman makes a strong claim when she argues that the emotional media influenced how America reacted to the 9/11 terrorist attack. The media unconsciously manipulates how they portray gender roles. Tahira Gonsalves goes over this really well in her article “Media Manipulations and Agency: Women in the L.T.TE. (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) of Sri Lanka.(Gonsalves)” Gonsalves argues that the women in the L.T.T.E. are only getting media coverage for their female fighting, they were not getting for their activism is what may be one of the largest global civil war. The media only covered the physical body and not the mind behind it(Gonsalves). This seem to be an issue that is occurring globally. The issue of unconscientious manipulation of genders roles in the media. This is supported by Souraya El Badaoui paper, “Gender-Based Portrayal as Media Form in Society” when Badaoui does a study on gender roles portrayed in the traditional media. The findings of the study were that the media portrays a social image particularly with women and their roles in society. David Bunker and James Bryson, concurred in their finding in their article, “Gender and the Media(Bunker and Bryson).” Bunker and Bryson used the Bern Sex Role Inventory to determine if their subject leaned more feminine or masculine based on media and television consumption.
