A Reunion With Boredom By Charles Simic
In recent discussions of A Reunion With Boredom, a controversial issue has been whether teens get bored with electronics or if it is our choice to be bored. On the one hand, teens have a whole range of things to do on computers ranging from social media to reading to drawing. From this perspective, I do not agree with teens who get bored with electronics. On the other hand, however, it is our choice if we get bored or not. There are many other things we can do besides laying in bed and getting bored. In the words of Charles Simic, one of his main proponents is, “people are forgetting to put down the electronics and step outside.” According to this view, kids use their time inside and communicate with devices rather than going outside and actually …show more content…
Unlike doing something or having a career, boredom is about the time you have with yourself and your thoughts. I asked my roommate another question, “Do you think boredom is a choice?” Her response was, “Yes, it is a choice. We choose to be bored. We choose to do the things we want to do. We could easily go outside and take a walk around the neighborhood instead of laying around and complaining.” In doing so, that will give us the time we need to decompress our thoughts and have alone time that we need with ourselves. With technology these days, we do not get to have that experience. We get so distracted by the television or the next ad that pops up on our youtube videos. We need to take time to be bored and just decompress our thoughts.
When you are in the boredom stage, time tends to move slow and that is all you have got on your hands. Time. I asked my roommate, “Do you let yourself be bored?” She replied, “ I never thought of that. I am always doing something so I do not give time to myself to just think.” The boredom of time can be agonizing for some people who cannot be quiet and alone with their thoughts, for example, my roommate. Learning to be bored is important for this day and age because we get so distracted by the little things and cannot stop to just

We will never have the time to decompress and think about our thoughts. We will not be able to have the time we need in order for us to not have a mental breakdown, even if it is five minutes of boredom. We need that time in order for us humans to survive this technology crazy world.
After that being said, I do concede that boredom is a choice and we do have things to do other than sitting and complaining about being bored. We never thought about relating boredom to thinking. These two things go hand in hand because when getting bored, we get time to ourselves to think. We get one on one time with our thoughts. Sometimes we need time to decompress and take time for ourselves. Even if it is for five minutes. Time is all we have with our thoughts and

Charles Simic writes an article based on his thoughts pertaining to the possession electronics play today: "A Reunion With Boredom". Movies play nonchalantly in homes, music in the car, chatter at the coffee shop; noise creates a sense of placement and purpose. He pulls ideas around the nostalgic potential of boredom. While being bored he is brought to reminisce of younger times when people would marry, read, move to California to escape boredom. Whereas now with the multitude of electronics at our fingertips, one does not…

What is boredom? According to John Taylor Gatto, boredom is ruining the modern day society’s schooling. Gatto is convinced that we ourselves is to blame for boredom, and believes everyone should be able to entertain themselves. “How public education cripples our kids, and why”, written by John Taylor Gatto, is papered with evidences. What Gabler fails to do is define entertainment. What may be considered entertaining for Taylor Swift may have been considered boring by Albert Einstein. And what may be fun for Nicki Minaj may have been considered a waste of time by Gregor Mendel. Different people seek different forms of entertainment, although throughout any form, as with anything in life, there is an upside and a downside. Music can be relaxing and soothing; but play it too loud and it harms your hearing. Watch the History channel and learn a thing or two, or watch Jersey Shore and become influenced by their outlandish behavior.…

But when boredom becomes chronic, it’s dangerous. The numb condition lures desperate humans into “make-me-feel-alive” behavior like over-eating, alcoholism, sex addiction, smoking, drug dependency, self-mutilation, fist-fighting, off-road racing, pathological gambling, and vandalism. It can plunge one into poor grades in school or poor work performance.…

Why did I use such a broad category like entertainment? Because I would miss all forms of entertainment. Music, television, and social media play an important role in my life. Music and television are undoubtedly my weaknesses. As I go to sleep, I listen to music; during my preparation for a new day; I have music playing; my car rides are always filled with some genre of music. Then after a long day of school, I come home and walk straight to my television with a purpose, as Mrs. Deidre Hester would describe it. My educational responsibilities are quickly disregarded as soon as I find a program to watch. If there is nothing entertaining showing, do I begin on my school work? No. I find other activities to engage in, whether it be social media surfing, or eating. Therefore, no entertainment is equal to boredom I my opinion. Being trapped on an island with none whatsoever can be good and bad. The bad part is the possibility of boring my life away, and the good thing is that it gives me the opportunity to focus and meditate on…

Imagine staying indoors on a rainy day, lying down listening to music softly playing through the stereo, and letting thoughts wander off into the unknown. I find this scene appealing. However, my friend considers letting the thoughts wander to be dull. My stepfather, Mike, has a habit of speaking enthusiastically about history and other topics that my mind does not comprehend nor cares to ever find interesting. There is a clear difference between what I find entertaining and what others spend their time enjoying. John Taylor Gatto and Colin Bisset analyze the term “boredom” and give their own opinion on the affect that boredom has on our lives. In the philosophical articles, “La Vie D’ennui” by Bisset and “Against School”…

According to John DiConsiglio between 70% and 90% of teens in the United States play video games and it is said that 5% to 10% of those kids are addicted to gaming, but what about the other 80%? Although people may argue that the internet or video games cause adolescents to have antisocial personalities that isn’t necessarily true for every person. The internet and videogames can have positive impacts on both the world and people’s lives. The internet and both online and video games aren’t detrimental to adolescents’ intellectual and social development because they can be used for educational tools and they allow teens to become more involved in the world around them.…

Boredom is a lack of inner interests. I believe that it's true that boredom leads to trouble, truthfully I have experience with being very bored. When I was younger I tended to not have much to do after school I had just gotten out of the play stage and was getting older. Growing out of a lot of childish toys, I tended to look for new things to do. I started to skateboard, joining a special type of troublemaking group. We did a lot of vandalism, creating a lot of messes, and also making people mad in our enjoyment. To be honest I loved it. I wasn't bored, but I also didn't realize that I was being bad in a result of being bored. Leaving that type of group I played sports, a year or two later I began to become very lazy. Boredom will make…
