Although 180,000 black men served in the union army, equality even as soldiers was still not provided for black men. Letters from desperate people to those in positions of power can illuminate what the conditions at the times were. In Hannah John’s letter to president Lincoln, the mother of a black soldier reveals an impassioned plea to the highest-ranking official at the time, clearly showing how black people felt that they could now seek hope through their government – which had once forsaken them. Abigail Adams' insightful letter of advice did not only inspire her son, but the children of America. As the wife of 2nd president John Adams, her involvement politically was unavoidable, so she implanted the ideas of environmental and political proactivity via a well composed letter to her son. This letter's success cannot be based on its concept alone, but also by its employment of formal language and historical/biblical allusions to ascend her ethos into that of great American history.…

This short article within the Honors Student Handbook provides profound information about honors programs at colleges and particular individuals excelling well above the average when it comes to learning in college. Students are essentially free when they begin college life. They are free to make their own decisions about their life and take responsibility for themselves when it comes to making decisions about their future. But sadly colleges have become too standardized for students, thus taking away from their individuality and freedom to make decisions by providing the students with requirements and pre-requisites that they need to fulfill to graduate with a specific degree. Pages 11-13 make clear that these colleges need to make a change and understand that not everyone is the same, and that not everyone is average in regards to how they learn and understand concepts that are taught to them. Colleges should not only record and base the majority of their results on quantitative data, but rather on qualitative data to illuminate certain characteristics within students that are hidden when grades are all that matter. The idea of college is becoming one of conformity rather than one of individuality, which it should be. The problem in this is being that the more intellectual students are held back due to the lack of accelerated courses because colleges make their main focus to appealing towards the average rather than the individual. Now the colleges are beginning to realize the effectiveness of appealing to the individual by taking steps towards variety instead uniformity.…

My purpose in writing this essay was to show that while “A letter to the President of the United States” was written by someone who was very knowledgeable and signed or approved by many other scientists was not successful. This essay goes to show that sometimes no matter how much valid evidence is presented to an individual regarding why they should not make a decision, they disregard that and make the decision anyway. I hope that the readers are able to understand that the scientists were truly worried about what long term effects the use of the atomic bomb would have on the United States.…

Some ways that my school can become stricter in the honors system are, possibly using cameras to watch kids from above as stated in Source A. The school staffs could become better at detecting cheaters. One way that this could happen is getting a computer program that detects plagiarism. What students need to know is that their name will not be brought. That is why these programs are being held up in success. Students are afraid of, “What if I get I reported on?” Cheating in schools is pretty much on-going. As Source D says, “The Internet provides a lot sources of information, and it’s tempting to simply insert phrases directly into reports.”…

By the time spring comes around, students have two things on their minds- summer and, sadly, standardized tests. Annually, around one million students take the ACT and SAT- even if they do not plan on attending college. Although the SAT and ACT are required, recently some colleges are saying they are not looking at the tests scores as much as they are looking at everything else. The tests should not be able to determine the student's academic abilities. Standardized testing should be abolished because a lot of money is wasted, a lot of time is wasted and they shouldn’t determine how ‘smart’ a student is.…

Graders and educators seem to emphasize assignments and grading for performance and understanding. The grading system basically labels a student’s image either being a smart/average/”dumb”. Knowing this will run very deep in how a child careers their self around school or when they have to do an assignment. The grading system makes the student more focused on what they can do to get the grade that is Above Standard than actually care about what they’re researching or learning about, this is assessing students and categorizing them basically in groups based on their knowledge and skill in the course. Teachers do try to motivate their students but it doesn’t always work and students begin to chase their grade and become disinterested in the course material. I saw a post the other day on why students cheat on exams to pass and the top reply was this “When students cheat on exams it’s because of our school system values grades more than students…
