The Honors College
The Honors College at Florida International University provides a world ahead education. Through the Honors classes, I will be able to challenge myself with rigorous courses. This will help achieve my academic goal of graduating with a 4.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) because the honors classes will prepare me for my other classes such as the ones in the university core curriculum. For example, the honors courses will make me a better writer, which would improve my critical thinking skill that would allow me to process information more efficiently. This will cause my other normal classes to become easier, which makes a 4.0 GPA attainable. Allowing and preparing me for a perfect

    From a lack of available parking spaces, to poorly managed dining services, the university has no shortage of problems that need to be solved. One problem in particular that deserves immediate attention is the issue of the Honors College. Being enrolled in the Jesup Scott Honors College is a prestigious honor and is a well-respected program; however, there are issues within the Honors College that make it difficult for the wide-eyed, ambitious freshmen to graduate as honors students. A major dilemma that works against students is the seemingly endless list of requirements to graduate with honors. Students are expected to complete 33 semester hours of honors courses, in addition to completing a capstone thesis and enroll in upper-level interdisciplinary seminars. These requirements may even be more strict for students in different majors/colleges. Another problem, is the lack of incentives for students to remain in the Honors College. While the thought of graduating with a medallion around one’s neck and more knowledge than most may seem enticing to some, most students need something extra to encourage them to stay in the program.     This short article within the Honors Student Handbook provides profound information about honors programs at colleges and particular individuals excelling well above the average when it comes to learning in college. Students are essentially free when they begin college life. They are free to make their own decisions about their life and take responsibility for themselves when it comes to making decisions about their future. But sadly colleges have become too standardized for students, thus taking away from their individuality and freedom to make decisions by providing the students with requirements and pre-requisites that they need to fulfill to graduate with a specific degree. Pages 11-13 make clear that these colleges need to make a change and understand that not everyone is the same, and that not everyone is average in regards to how they learn and understand concepts that are taught to them. Colleges should not only record and base the majority of their results on quantitative data, but rather on qualitative data to illuminate certain characteristics within students that are hidden when grades are all that matter.     The Honors Program grabbed my attention because it’s for academically outstanding students and I am that student.
