A decade of difference
Walk for Babies has been making a difference for the Akron Children’s Hospital NICU unit for 10 years. In that time, the event has raised over $800,000, all of which has been given directly to the hospital. The event was started by Sam and Shelby Snellenburger of ABC MotorCredit to help support the families and medical staff doing the vital work of caring for sick or premature newborns. members of the Akron community. Money raised by Walk for Babies is used to fund research, the purchase of equipment, and other NICU programs.
Team work builds healthy communities
At its heart, Walk for Babies is a team event. This year, 103 teams raised money and joined forces at the Canal Park Akron Rubber Ducks Stadium for the 1-mile sponsored walk. Walkers ranged in age from 3 months old to 98 years old and traveled from as far as Alaska to participate. The largest team represented The Goddard School and was made up of 120 individuals. The Goddard school took home the award for most money raised, coming in at $9,476. Sam Snellenburger took the honor of most funds raised by an individual with $5,675. Many participants also had a personal connection to the NICU, with one member of team Colton’s Crusaders having left the NICU only one day prior to the event. At 37 years old, participant Jennifer Sweeny represented the oldest NICU grad present. Two teams, Carter’s Crew and Qunitastics, were tied for the most NICU grads on one team, with each team having 5 former NICU patients. This diverse group of dedicated team members shows how vital the NICU is to the entire community.
Voices of hope
Several different community members took the stage at Walk for Babies to inspire participants and increase awareness of the work done by the NICU. Shelby Snellenburger, who has been involved with Walk for Babies since its inception, kicked off the event with a wonderful speech. Bill Considine, CEO of Akron Children’s Hospital, and Laurie Fortune, a NICU nurse of 30 years, both spoke as well. There was also a showing of a video created by NICU grad parent Vince Spicocchi which highlighted the journey of 10 different NICU families. Watch the video here to learn more about the challenges faced by NICU patients and to get inspired to participate in next year’s Walk for Babies event.
