ACT Writing: Dress Code In today’s society, it is considered “normal” to dress in provocative clothing because it’s currently the fashion trend. Some females often dress in short shorts or crop tops that show more skin than flappers in the 1920’s. To improve the learning environment for students, high schools should adopt a dress code. Since fashion trends changed dramatically from no skin to showing skin, many students try to keep up to date. Even though everyone is granted the freedom to express their point of view or fashion sense, however, there needs to be a limit of how much skin a student shows. A lot of students in my high school often get away with dressing inappropriately because there are approximately 2000 students. If rules are stated and not enforced, many will not follow them. Adopting a dress code can help some students out to avoid embarrassment. Because of today’s fashion trend, some students do not realize that their shorts may be too short or having a see-through shirt may be too much. School should be an environment for learning and achieving academic goals, not a fashion runway. Schools must punish students for breaking rules in order to have a better learning environment. As stated before, 2000 teenagers in one high school can be pretty tough to control. Hiring enough safe-eds to keep track of what every student wears during school would be a waste of school budget. Even with punishment followed by broken rules, some students still risk it because they would not be caught very often. Many students argue that they should have their own right to dress however they want. These students would be offended because their fashion sense is looked down upon as “provocative”. Weighing the ups and downs for both sides, schools should adopt dress codes since it is mostly about learning. Students can still wear the current fashion style because not every single clothing item would be placed in the “banned” category. They can
