Besides patient care, administrative nurses also have the task of overseeing and approving budgets. They are responsible for making patient care efficiently and cost friendly. uses to care for a patient . A nurse manager may be asked to log inventory of the products and make sure the items are also restocked daily . Office supplies include paper , paperclips , pens or other tools that are used to benefit the patient and employees . If the materials are not carefully monitored and distributed they can become costly . (Danna,2017)
As the head of the nursing department, Administrative nurses are expected to be motivational leaders and uplift their teams. According to Camille Singleton, an Administrative nurse at Lakeview Family Practice in Lexington, SC, a nurse must be able to lead with a firm hand, yet guide with wisdom and love to give patients the best experience possible. An administrative nurse is given the task to direct, review, and supervise all work and patient related activities. The healthcare industry is rapidly changing , which is why it is important to establish credibility with team members. Nurse Managers should also demonstrate critical thinking . The ability to adapt to changes will allow them to be versatile and adjust to changing enviornments as well as as advancements in healthcare. (Leadership, 2014). To become an administrative nurse, it is required to attend a 4 year university and obtain a bachelor’s degree in health care or nursing. There are many schools that have excellent nursing programs such as the University of South Carolina. The nurses in study are given classroom experience as well as clinical practices in real health care environments. Masters of Science in healthcare degrees (BSN) are prevalent among majority of health care managers. There are many certifications and licenses that will better prepare a health care professional for the expected task in this career; majority will be obtained through years’ experience. For example , many administrative nurses will obtain state licensure as a registered nurse .
Internships are a great way to gain fist hand experience in the field of nursing.
For nurses that begin their careers as a RN (Registered Nurse), they have already participated in an internship.
Internships are a great way to gain experience and find jobs in a field that interest the nurse.During an internship it is important to highlight the qualitities that will make you stand out . Internships are an excellent way to see if you can actually handle the workplace expectations of the healthcare environment . Many nursing programs will assist students in finding places to be an intern . Centura college allows nursing graduates to choose their preferred school of interest. 60% percent of nurses are hired after during or after an internship. If positions become available during your internship , you are more likely to be hired because the employer has had an opportunity to evaluate and observe your work skills . Interns are given the advantage of being able to showcase their ability on a trail basis before being formally interviewed or …show more content…
hired.
When interviewing Camille Hingleton, I was told about her experience in her very first internship after college. “I was hired unexpectedly after my internship. It was unexpected
because I didn’t feel as if I was being successful at my new career. The work was challenging and there was never a moment I felt that I was succeeding because no one praises you or acknowledges any work. When I was hired, I asked the head nurse why the treated interns a certain way, and she replied because it’s important to identify nurses that can perform all the tasks expected of them without needing praise from others.”
Administrative nurses should make the most of every interview or shadowing experience. It’s an opportunity to show employers and peers what you can offer to the healthcare environment. An administrative nurse needs to have integrity, compassion and a desire to lead in a fast paced and constantly changing workplace.
Nursing is a field that can vary in pay.
Experience can be an important factor in deciding pay in this field. An administrative nurse with adequate experience would make 82,000 dollars a year. However, certifications, licenses, experiences and choice of place of employment can raise salary up to 200,000 dollars a year. According to the experts at Salary Inc. ,Higher educated nursing is one of the few careers that have the opportunity to earn six figures. Along with Anesthesiologist assistants , Administrative nurses will most likely be the higher paid health care professionals . Many employers will raise salaries to encourage furthering education to better serve patients. While talking to Administrative Nurse Camille Hingleton , she shared with me her journey to obtaining her current position . During her 5 years working at Columbia Heart , located in columbia ,SC , she was given the opportunity to go to school and become a certified x-ray technician . While being paid to work as well as study for the certification , she was also given a pay increase for gaining the new skill
.
All professionals in the healthcare field are encouraged to continuously advance their skills to adapt to the constantly changing environment. As new cures and procedures are created
to better serve patients , it important that everyone , especially nurse managers be open minded and critical thinkers . Critical thinking will be a skilled used daily without notice . For example , critical thinking may be needed to over come language or culture barriers . During my interview with Ms. Hingleton , she shared with me an experience that involved an Islamic woman who was uncomfortable undressing to be examined by male healthcare professionals . Because of the language barrier , it was difficult for nurses to communicate with her to discus examination and treatment plans. Ms. Hingleton decide to solve the problem by assembling an all female staff just for her case , as well as using the skills one of the nurses in her staff had to communicate with her . When the woman’s family arrived they were grateful for the experience . A simple adjustment to make a patient more comfortable or raking barriers to heal are exactly what being an administrative nurse is all about .
It is sometimes difficult to ask a person so unaccomplished in life , what they want to do for the rest of their lives . Its obscene to think a person who just a year ago couldn’t drive themselves to school is now having to compare salaries , and educational requirements to determine their financial fate . While the questions similar to those are still unanswered to many , myself has always known .
My mother’s professional background in this field has heavily influenced my career choice as well has the numerous family members I have , that are also in the nursing field . I aspire to be like my mother in all ways , so when asked what I want to be in life the answer has always been simple . I watched as my mother went through the stress of her job and how well she always handled issues . I observed her ability to guide others and lead by example to bring others togethers to accomplish a common goal .
I will be successful in administrative nursing because of I have the drive it takes to pursur my dream . The qualities to excel in this path have already been instilled in me as a child , and the next step is obtaining the education and experience to allow me to rise .
