Administrator Challenges
The three major areas of the criminal justice system administration include the police, the courts, and the correctional system. Although these different areas have different roles and responsibilities, the administrators of each area have similar functions. However, the three different areas can present issues and satisfactions in job functions for administrators. This paper will discuss the major issues and satisfactions for administrators in corrections.
Major Issues
Administrators in any job function face major issues, and administrators in the correctional system are no different. Administrators may face major issues with budgeting, ethics, or safety of inmates and staff. Each of these issues present challenges for administrators on a daily basis.
Budgeting
Budgeting offers a huge challenge for administrators in corrections. Administrators are responsible for creating effective budgets to ensure inmates receive appropriate services. The daily activities are not predictable. Therefore, an administrator cannot predict accurately how any specific day will begin or end. Additionally, an administrator can sense pride when his or her staff works effectively to ensure the safety of the inmates in their charge. Conversely, the administrator may experience a sense of disappointment if his or her staff behaves inappropriately. However, the disappointment may lead to satisfaction when he or she can demonstrate effective leadership by creating new policy his or her staff embraces removing the potential for the inappropriate
