Admissions Essay
My interest in social work manifested itself to me when I became a parent. All of my schooling before then only prepared me so much as to what was to come. Things that I had experienced in life and was experiencing at the time heightened my senses to major questions that plagued me. I believe that my academic as well as my professional involvement dealing with social and psychological issues have enhanced my interest. Not only is it a profession for me, but it’s a way of dealing with everyday life. Not just dealing but understanding the mind – of others and of myself. I believe that I have chosen the right profession because the more I learn the more interested in psychology and social work I become.

My interest in social work has become a way of life for me. I have an interest in helping and healing which is what I feel that social work is all about. The term ‘social work’ may not sound like much to the untrained ear but I believe that if we could all take a moment, with patience and understanding listen to the needs of people and design different ways to help, then it’s not really work because I often find myself helping me when I’m helping others which do not feel like ‘work’ at all. It’s more of a duty, especially in today’s society when 1 out of 5 people are dealing with an emotional if not psychological issue.

While communicating with people of different nationalities and cultures, I find that although we are basically the same as people, our traditions, upbringing and mindset are different. The optimistic people share the same views and ideas but the people who have issues dealing with life; have mixed ideas and thoughts of society. When it’s all over, no matter what culture I’m communicating with, I find that I can help them as well as they can help me with understanding challenges that plague us a whole today.
Although I am a working individual, I feel because of my background and learned experience, I can devote and dedicate my time and attitude

Reflecting back on this course, my impression on the field of Social Work embraces that this fields rests far more diverse and incriminated into society than I previously thought; “Not only do they help the individuals cope with the situation at hand, they advocate for them and seek out valuable resources and other means of support for the affected person(s)” (XXX). Prior to this course, I detained a misconception that social workers predominantly counseled individuals, when in reality, social workers integrate collaboration, advocacy, investigating, counseling, planning, monitoring, and organizing into their occupational responsibilities. Social work can be seen as a job, which carries a variety of inherent stresses (Gillepsie, 1986:23). According to Gillepsie (1986:23) the nature of social work activity, the problems that social workers must confront, the limitations of knowledge and professional ability, and the structure of the social work profession all converge to produce a job with inherent stresses. The social worker’s environment can be quite demanding, as social workers must face the continual responsibility of meeting the emotional needs and desires of clients (Larson, Gilbertson & Powel, 1978).…

My most prized possession is my mental stability and ethical background that I have acquired from my southern upbringing. Growing up in a rural community in the south and being reared by elderly parents allowed my seeds of character and respect to be nurtured by an entire village of people who saw my potential and wanted to see me succeed and thus pushed and prayed for my wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. As a child, series of unique experiences of being able to develop intimate and loving relationships with almost everyone in my community made me appreciate the influence of everyone on my life. It was not long before I realized that no matter how old or young, rich or poor, or educated a person was, everyone contributed to humanity’s niche…
