Admissions Essay: Ban Ki-Moon
I traveled New York City alone during this fall break. A lot of things in NYC fascinated me such as fabulous shopping Centers, busy New Yokers on Wall Street, delicious food, meaningful historical places, and a spectacular view from the Empire State Building. However, there was one place that I had to go. It was United Nations. There was a person that I desperately wanted to see, Ban Ki-Moon, the eighth and current Secretary-General of the United Nations. Ban is a very strong and ethical leader and helped me to set my dream to help others.

Ban Ki-Moon is the second Asian, also the first Korean who became the Secretary-General of the United Nations. My father sent me the book that Ban wrote when I was having the hardest time in America. From his years as a diplomat in Korea, he was well-known to be modesty and humble. I believe that he became the Secretary-General of the United Nations to gain power and fame. It is a job to solve tensions between nations, environmental issues, orphan issues and so on, but get blamed easily. A person can not easily give up their power and have a heart to work to help others. My dream is to make a cure for eczema. In many countries, eczema, an extreme skin disease, is spread due to the environmental issues and it is found on a youth often times. I was one of the unfortunate ones. It is a horrible and deadly disease coming from my experience and doesn’t have a cure of a definite cause. Even though I’m almost cured, my heart breaks for the little children who have to go through it. A lab worker for a disease that is very obscure and newly known could be a very challenging job and it is possible to be poorly paid. However, it would be very rewarding to help the suffering children to be cured and become normal happy

My ultimate goal is to be a specialized doctor. I’m pursuing medicine as a result of my dad who died of his heart condition. Since he was young, his heart condition was unbeknownst to the family due to the absence of advanced medicine and facilities in our village in China. I was only one year old, when my father passed away. He couldn't make it because the nearest hospital was hours away and my family simply couldn’t afford the treatment. If he was diagnosed and treated early on, or if China had affordable, widespread hospitals and medical education this could have been…

Muhammad Ali knew that he was violating the law, but he did not perpetuate that he was above the law; he knew the consequences and was fully prepared to accept them. He was arrested and convicted to 5 years in prison, and he underwent years of public backlash against his decision. However, it was the same war that caused the downfall of Lyndon B. Johnson, who-once revered and respected for his work in social programs to help his country-became bombarded with mockery and a daily dose of “Hey hey LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?”…

on Notice: U.S. Is ‘Taking Names” described her first day on the job. The article described Nikki Haley actions as she issued a severe warning to the United States allies and rivals. Nikki spoke on that the United States will move into the so called “America first” precedent. She discussed that her boss and his administration would hold to account those who do not back the United States. Nikki Haley one of the only females working for the Trump administration presented her diplomatic credentials to the secretary general, António Guterres. Antonio Guteress in fact a former socialist politician from Portugal who took over the United Nations at the start of the year. The UN is in a tough time because Guterres as the article described, is under pressure to persuade the Trump administration to not gouge the organization and to uphold America’s international obligations. Some of the international obligations, including climate change which was one of President Obamas greatest assets. In international relations we discuss many different relationships and how different nations deal with different councils. One of those councils is the Security Council. As the article explained, Haley’s appointment as ambassador to the United Nation comes at a rocky time for our global body. This is also in large part because of a December Security Council resolution condemning the Israeli settlements. These were strictly made possible by the abstention of the outgoing president’s administration. The United Nations as we learned in class, is the glue that keeps many countries thriving, but our new president Trump, has lamented how little the United Nations gives back compared to what the United States is putting in. When Haley was introduced and spoke in her first news conference it became evident that her boss means business and is hoping to focus less on forging powers and more…

Imagine leaving everything that was once a part of your life because a new government began ruling the nation you live in. Imagine watching innocent people being taken away, hearing screams and gunshots, and knowing that these individuals have been killed without even seeing it happen. This is what living in Cambodia during the Cambodian Genocide was like. Each day, instead of growing larger and stronger, children were growing weak. As a young girl, Loung Ung lived through this war. Years later, she wrote a novel called “First They Killed My Father”. In this book, Ung records the experiences that she and her family encountered while trying to live through the civil war. If I were to meet any of the individuals mentioned in this novel, I would…

When I finished reading the book “Escape from Camp 14” by Blaine Harden, I realized that there were so many serious problems we should have known about the circumstance of the North Korea. It was actually much more horrible than I expected. Mass murders and genocide are some of the worst possible atrocities to happen to mankind. There have been many in the past, like the Holocaust (1933-1945), but the unfortunate reality is that genocide is not a thing of the past. Genocides are actually becoming more and more popular, and who knows which country could be next. The North Korean and Darfur genocides are happening right now, and there are many differences and similarities between them, including how they are both tragic events.…
