the small town of Alberta, Canada from grade school all the way up to until high school. He had
five other sisters and was also the youngest out the bunch of them. Apparently, Albert Bandura’s
parents always encouraged him to venture out of the small town of Alberta, which then only
consisted of a population of about 400 people. After working in Yukon as a pothole filler on the
Alaskan Highway, Bandura then was inspired to attend school for human psychopathology.
Albert Bandura then traveled to the United States of America, obtaining a bachelor's
degree in psychology from UBC (the University of British Columbia) ; and a Ph.D. from UI (the

of Iowa). At first, his research began with the role of social modeling in human
motivation, focusing of the processes of human thoughts and humans interactions between each
other. Then with his colleague, Richard Walters, he began to study social learning, focusing of
the aspects of aggression and observational learning.
Yet Bandura went somewhat solo to become sort of famous for his “bobo doll
[experimental] study”. In short summary, the experimental study revealed that children are
observational learners, and can act out on a certain matter without having to be proposed a
reward for “good” or appropriate behavior! In the time this observation was discovered, the
findings seemed to be phenomenal. Bandura proposed four steps that led to the “successful
findings” of this study. One was that the child subject had to be paying attention. Second, the
child had to retain/remember the information that was shown or proposed to them. Third the
child subject had to reproduce the behavior that was shown/proposed to them. And lastly all of
this had to be backed up with some form of motivation.
Bandura’s theory was based on the processes of social learning which emphasized
aspects such as modeling, imitating, and more importantly, observational learning. In the bobo
doll experimental study, a group of children were shown a clip of an adult beating up a bobo doll
and yelling at it aggressively. Afterwards, those same children were brought into a room with a
number of toys to possibly play with, that of which included the infamous bobo doll. All of
children in the experimental study group that watched the bobo doll video, surely enough
gravitated to the doll and began to imitate the same violent actions and shout the same aggressive
words that were shown in the video.
Bandura called this phenomenal theory “reciprocal determinism”. He suggested in his
theory that a person’s behavior could cause or change the environment that they’re in; the same
way that the environment could cause or change a person’s behavior. There is stimuli that can
come from an environment and their is a stimuli that can come out of a person’s presence alone.
Stimuli from both sides interact with each other, resulting in a change of the normalcy or status
quo of things.
The successful finding that result out of the bobo doll experimental study, also helped
Albert Bandura conjure up suggested methods that could be used in therapy; a technique that
would become to be known as “self control therapy”. Steps of this therapeutic methods would
include behavioral charts, environmental planning and selfcontracts. The behavior charts were
selfobserved by the patient to help the patient list any changes that may occur before and after
therapy. (Example: Albert Bandura suggested they keep a log, journal or diary for realization
purposes and/or to mark any positive or negative progression that the patient may experience).
The second step included environmental planning for the patient. (Example: Whatever
environment would cause the patient to relapse in, they were suggested to stay away from that
environment). And the last and final step included the patient creating a contract for themselves
as a reward system for any positive progression. (Example: If there was no relapse in a week's
time, the patient could reward themselves by going out to buy a new item, or treat themselves
to
ice cream).
To me personally, I believe that Bandura was a great psychologist. He made phenomenal
discoveries and created great ideas that are still talked about and used today. In this day and age,
I believe his experiment revealed they impact that videos (Ex. television, Youtube) has a great
impact on va child’s behaviors, that’s why parents should be careful to monitor what their
children are watching.
