Everyone craves super human intelligence, to be able to recall things no one would ever know. What if you had that knowledge and after a few months you discover it's deteriorating at a rapid pace. Having your knowledge torn away, and to top it all off you’ll die. Just to have more intelligence. In the book this exact experiment tortured the main character charlie in the worst way possible, allowing him to experience incredible feelings such as love, pride, accomplishment, realizations, and have them ripped away by the hands of god and left to die.
In this specific quote “Algernon died two days ago. Dissections shows my predictions were right, his brain had decreases in weight, and there was a general smoothing out of cerebral …show more content…
convolutions as well as a deepening and broadening of brain fissures. I guess the same thing is or will soon be happening to me.” (page 533) this quote shows how he knows he's not only going to die but his intelligence will be ripped away incredibly fast but pain stakingly slow. And when his intelligence starts to decrease and he knows hit, his cry for help is so heartbreaking the reader might want to cry.
This sentence, “Ive got to hold on to some of it. Some of the things ive learned. Oh, god, please don't take it all away!” (Page 533) shows the reader that heg genuinely doesn't want to die and he wants to grasp on to the thin thread that is intelligence so he can climb back up to the top, unfortunately his grip on the thread, the thread of intelligence, reality, happiness, is slowly losing traction as he slides further and further down the chaotic hole of the deepest darkest depths of his unintelligent life. Even though his spiral towards mental illness was incredibly rough, his ascendance to knowledgable life wasn't a cakewalk either. In this saddening quote “Mr donnegan insisted I left. What did I do to make them hate me so?” (Page 527) this quote shows that people aren't liking the new him and went out of their way to get him fired. No man, Human, animal, or thing deserves to get increases intelligence and have it ripped away. And to add insult to injury have them die and with a cherry on top, have them mentally crippled (i.e depression) this is why charles gordon’s
ascendant and descendant of knowledge was human torture and he has lived the worst life in human history, Id rather live and not love, than love and die a few short months later. In conclusion charlie gordon has sacrificed so much in the name of science, but he was so ignorant they tricked him into thinking he was going to be fine after the surgery, he was fired by his co workers, crippled emotionally, praying to god, and discovering he was going to regain his mental illness and die. These are reason there were more costs than benefits. And this is literally inhumane torture bestowed upon a poor mentally challenged man
