Through the characters of Chris and Keller in All My Sons, Miller is emphasizing the extent of Keller’s moral injustice. Keller blamed his wrong decisions on Steve, his co-worker, neighbour and friend in order to save his reputation and business, and for years lied his way out of the guilt . Chris on the other hand is the righteous son who is uncomfortable with the success of his father’s business during war time, describing the money to have “[…]blood on it”. He is also mentioned by other “characters that “When he tells you something you know its so” displaying his truthful character. Miller achieves to highlight how self-concerned Keller is by comparing Chris’s moral character to Keller’s immoral character..
Character Study 1 – Chris
What does he appear to embody for Miller? (His symbolic Role)
Chris embodies the moral character in the play. He always does the right thing in the sense that he never lies. Chris is a major truth-teller in the play, and is supported in this role by Ann. Several characters attest to Chris’s truthfulness. In Act Two, Ann says of him, “Whenever I need someone to tell me the truth I’ve always thought of Chris.” Jim says of Joe’s secret, in conversation with Kate: “Chris would never know how to live with a thing like that. It takes a certain talent … for lying. You have it, and I do. But not him” His symbolic role is the righteous, moral version of his father.
What happens to his views of people and himself as the play goes on?
The play begins with Chris being the righteous, honourable man who wishes to live in love together with people than against them. He tries his best to please everyone. Even his delusional mother. He was very hesitant to talk to her about Larry because he knew she would get upset. He was very passive about his emotions and lets everybody else’s wishes come first. Although, we really see him starting to stand up for himself,
