Almost Maine Play Analysis
Almost Maine is a play by John Cariani and directed by Lesley Tutnick-Machbitz. Narrating nine short stories taken place in a small Maine town at the same time. Each story has a different theme varied of love, loss, and hope. With six show dates at Glendale Community College Performing Art Center, I was given the opportunity to be part of the run crew. I was able to observe the growth of the actors and see them transform into their characters through behavior, movement, and voice. The cast was made up of nine people and nineteen characters. Each actor had at least two roles on the show. Depending on their present mood and if they did not concentrate while being on stage, they struggled to transform into their characters. Sometimes when …show more content…
Based on their movement, I was able to tell if they were nervous angry, confused, etc. Part of the actors would take time to practice and go over their mistakes before going on stage. Every time Jessica would mess up, or she was given feedback, she would separate herself from the group and focus on staying in character and improve her performance. Jessica's two roles were Hope and Glory. I think that aside from all the actors, in my eyes, I think Jessica had the most growth and struggle. She has a busy life and I saw how sometimes she struggle to connect with her characters. At some point, she did not perform her best in one scene and she let it affect her other performance. I saw this moment to learn from her, it taught me that sometimes there is going to be bad performances but you can't let it affect the rest of the show. And if you, you have to shake it off and not let the bad vibes ruin the next show date. The day after her bad performance, Jessica did a beautiful job with the next show. Her tone of voice on that following show connected with Hope. I could feel how miserable she was and how much regret she had for leaving …show more content…
It was covered on mountains of snow, with a small porch and two doors. In every transition, snow would fall and the same music play to indicate the same time but different people. In every scene, there was the sound of an owl, and at the climax or each story, the Northern green lights would appear in the background. If the scene was taken place outside, the costumes included winter jackets, boots, hats, and warm pants. In the scene Sad and Glad, This Hurts, and Getting It Back, the costumes pertain to warm clothes but not heavy jackets and boots. More like jeans, t-shirts, and leggings. Since they are supposed to be regular people from a small town, their makeup was kept natural and nothing too exaggerated. My favorite props were the flying lamps, I think it added a very simple and unique touch to the

For the men, suits and top hats were worn. Makeup for both actors and actresses was done to be very dramatic and dark, emphasizing the lips and eyes. From the playwright and director position, the costume choice and makeup provided a key component to the play, drawing the attention of the audience and focusing in on the outward…

The set was well made and fit the time period quite nicely, but I could not help but feel it could have used a few more props to give the audience a better sense of immersion. It was often hard to tell where the scene was, or if the characters had changed scenes or not. Using more props would also give more distinction between events and places, making the overall scenes more memorable. One of the strongest points in the play was the costumes. They all were extraordinarily well made, and looked authentic. Some of the notable mentions are Prince Pedro’s uniform, the watchmen’s uniforms, and all the costumes in the ball scene. The costumes helped the audience remember which characters are which, and make the play more memorable.…

The set was absolutely stunning. It involved two raked platforms which were screwed to the actual floor of the stage, three flat platforms on the back, and two bridges connecting the flat platforms to the raked ones. The gap between the floor and the top of the back platforms were covered with burlap which gave it a very distinguished rustic look. The platforms were all painted and textured to make it look distressed and dirty and the floor was painted up to the audience. The backdrop was painted to look like a sky with rolling fields off in the distance and big fluffy clouds. Everything looked exceptionally realistic and it was gorgeous. The audience could tell that tons of work went into creating this alternate reality. The colors used were fairly basic, mainly blues and browns, but they represented the symbolism well. Due to the amount of times water and dirt are mentioned in the show, the sets color palette reflected the script…

Throughout Margaret Edson’s post modern drama, a plethora of implicit and explicit connections to John Donne’s metaphysical poetry are illuminated through the characterisation of Vivian Bearing as she lives through Donne. John Donne has been abducted to the sterilized academic world of ‘publish or perish’, along with the myriad central values of enduring themes that engulf the audience due to their prevailing ability to transcend contextual barriers.…

In terms of props, I tried to stay minimalistic as well. My main props were chair, knife, wooden board teddy bear, white piece of cloth and roses. In terms of lighting, I used spotlight in red and white colors. My costume and make up were designed by me. I used a white, long dress that I cut and modified into a dirty piece of cloth with many holes.…
