them one by one through social media such as Skype. This movie basically attempts to display numerous tragedies of online harassment that actually happened in real life.
In retrospect, Internet could be a double-edged sword. On one hand, Internet might have the capability to bring positive impact on human development. On the other hand, the rise of Internet has also transported undesirable impacts to human society, like the emergence of cyber bullying.
In the first place, I believe that one of the most harmful effects of Internet is its instant effect. As technology improves, Internet gives an instant effect for bullies to attack their targets. This new form of bullying could be measured as cyber bullying. In some ways, online bullying may differ from the traditional bullying. The most noticeable is that victims and bullies are interconnected through networking, which is Internet. Online bullying might turn out to be more abusive than the traditional bullying because it is not limited to specific places. According to an article written by No Bullying (2014), cyber bullying can appear in several forms. It includes spreads rumor, threats, harassment, trickery, and other forms. Those …show more content…
actions may be conducted through text messaging, websites, social media such as Tumblr, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and other websites (Pieschl et al, 2013). A survey has found that numerous teenagers have conveyed that cyber bullying is far more terrible than the traditional virtual bullying (Lohmann, 2012). Previously, bullies must harass their victims in such place like schoolyard, workplaces, or other places. However, nowadays people are able to bully their victims without their presence because Internet could connect people more easily and promptly. Internet creates a new level and more strutted look of bullying owing to the fact that the perpetrators are able to use a relentless way of abusing and intimidating their victims 24/7. In relation to theory of globalization, Internet is included as one of the development of new information technology (Castells, 2012). Apparently, Internet helps people to share information and be connected rapidly. In my opinion, bullying perpetrator would prefer to bully online because the instant effect. This prompt effect has led cyber bullies to not be aware about times and places, so they can instantly attack their victims anytime and anywhere they want.
As Internet advances, the more sophisticated and cruel bullying becomes. One of another negative effects is how Internet offering feature anonymity behind screen. Internet has brought the issue of bullying to the next level. The existence of Internet has made some users to easily hide behind a screen or pretending to be anonymous. Internet has offered the anonymous feature where someone can use Internet without any valid personal identification. This anonymity empowers cyber bullies to, continue antagonizing their victims. To put it in another way, online bullies now have the ability to say whatever they want, including spewing hateful and unnecessary comments without any major implications. Moreover, the feature of being anonymous gives online bullies the power to say and act anything without getting caught. These bullies will pretend to be a user that using false identities and obscure accounts in regard to bully their victims. They assume that it will be safe to attack others if they protect their original identity. Hence, many bullies create fake profile through private number or fake social media account so that they can pick on someone to be oppressed without showing their original identity. According to an article reported by Kids Safety by Kaspersky (2015), the perpetrator of cyber bully might be someone around the children’s entourage because the cyber bullies will not hide their identity if the children do not recognize them. Amanda Todd could be the most realistic example when it speaks about cyber bully (Hainsworth, 2014). Prior to her suicide, it is considered that an anonymous account in Facebook had severally appeared by using her topless photograph as the profile picture (“My story: struggling, bullying, suicide, self-harm”, 2012). More severely, this fake account had contacted Amanda’s schoolmate so that it caused her to eventually move to new schools. In my reconsideration, I notice that the obscurity element of Internet might construct cyber bullying to be more tormenting because online harassment could occur without physical interaction between the perpetrators and victims. For example is the suicide case that happened to Jessica Lanney in 2012 (Robson & Warren, 2012). Hanna smith was a 16 years old girl who killed herself by being bullied on Ask Fm. She committed to suicide right after an anonymous profile tormented her and keeps calling her ‘whore and fat’ (Robson & Warren, 2012). In the same way, Hanna Smith, a girl from Leicestershire, was ended her life due to anonymous act on Ask Fm. Both of these identical issues have exhibited how online bullies can abuse teenagers while they are covering themselves behind their anonymity (“Teenager Hannah Smith killed herself because online bullying, says father”, 2013).
Aside of providing the anonymity feature, Internet has also proposed an extra amount of protection to the bully offender.
In consideration at the impact of globalization, we can perceive that Internet is opened for anyone from any places throughout the world. In other words, the improvement of technology has comprised Internet is ‘borderless’ in terms of information and technology. (York, 2015). The impact of Internet has made the perpetrators of online bullying is difficult to trace or discover. As a result, bullies feel safe if they do not give a true personal identification. As earlier mentioned, one of the appeals of Internet is that cyber bullies could bully their victims without revealing their true identity. In this way, with the Internet protection, the victims might have no idea who is harassing them. Knowing that their victims cannot identify their identity has encouraged cyber bullies to be more aggressive and abusive than what they do in face-to-face encounter. A study conducted by Slonje et al (2012) has shown that bully offender feel less regret when they cannot see their victims’ reaction due to the anonymity feature. The online buddies have underestimated the impact of bullying on their victims. In my opinion, the existence of Internet has led cyber bullying to become more dangerous day by day. Digital technology has facilitated irresponsible people to attack others. We can see that Internet is the platform for someone to spread lies, attack, and hoax. The
suicide of Charlotte Dawson might be the illustration for the protection component of Internet. Charlotte Dawson is an Australian next top model and TV personality that committed to suicide after she was trolled by unknown profile in Twitter (Sauers, 2012). Consequently, it caused her to be target of online harassment and what even worse is that up until now the police never found the bullies. This case indicates that it is hard to spot the perpetrators of cyber bullying within the expansion of technology.
In light of the negative impact of Internet, the advancement of technology has evolved the old type of bullying into its new formula that also deemed cyber bullying. Internet has damaged society especially the youth through this new form bullying. As what mentioned above, Internet has provided protections, anonymity, and instant access for everyone. To some extent, some people may utilize these facilities to execute crimes including cyber bullying. After learning this substance, I would have claimed that I had gained a better understanding on how globalization affects human life in various ways. Accordingly, this topic of study has changed my point of view about globalization. First of all, this analysis has shown me the new lesson of how the growth of technology and the rising of criminal act are so relatable. The development of technology has produced the new form of unethical attitude. With the advancement of technology through Internet, we could observe how cyber bullies are more eager to torture their victims. The freedom of Internet has affected bullies offenders to not concern about the real damage of what they are doing anymore. They never realize the damaging impact of bullying on the victim where it could haunt the victims for years or even for the rest of their lives. Last but not least, this issue has taught me that globalization is not always appeared in generous ways. As the two face of coin, globalization can contribute both favorable and destructive consequences on society and individuals.
