Ampalaya (Momordica Charantia)

Ampalaya is a vegetable grown throughout the Philippines. It grows wild in the remote areas of Mt. Banahaw. As the English name suggests (bitter melon), the melon has a bitter taste due to the presence of momordicin. Ampalaya is also considered the best herbal medicines for its ability to help with liver problems, Diabetes and HIV.
Ampalaya are excellent sources of Vitamin B, iron, calcium, and phosphorus. It is also rich in beta carotene. All of it parts are consumable that can help to our body to protect from disease. Leaves are used for astringent to treat hemorrhoids and piles. Sap or juice of leaves used to treat skin problems. Pounded leaves used to treat for burns and scald. Fruits are used to treat for diabetes, stomach problems, cough and wounds. Ampalaya seeds and roots are used to treat urethral discharge, can be used to abort pregnancy. The flowers are used to treat asthma. Ampalaya is the best medicine for human health problems. But when the juice of ampalaya injected to the lab rats or other animals they will be toxin.

    Ampalaya is a climbing vine, nearly or quite smooth, annual vine. Tendrils are simple, up to 20 centimeters long. Leaves are 2.5 to 10 centimeters in diameter, cut nearly to the base into 5 to 7 lobes, oblong-ovate, variously toothed, and heart-shaped at the base. Male flower is about 12 millimeters long, and is peduncle, with a rounded, green, and about 1 centimeter long bract approximately at the middle. Female flower is yellow flower, about 15 millimeters long, long-stalked with pair of small leaf like bracts at middle or toward base of stalk. Fruit, in cultivated form, is green, fleshy, oblong, cylindrical, 15 to 25 centimeters long, pointed at both ends, ribbed and wrinkled, bursting when mature to release seeds; in wild forms, ovoid, about 2 to 4 centimeters long. Seeds are oblong, compressed 10 to 13 millimeters long, and corrugated on the margins (Philippine Medical Plant, 2014). Flowering of M. charantia started 38 + 3.5 d after planting with the development of male flowers earlier than the female flowers. Flowers started to open at about 0300 h, and were fully opened at 0530-1200 h. A successfully pollinated female flower started to set fruit after 2-5 diameters (Rodelina & Cleofas, 2009).…

But do we really know what a coffee is and where it came from? Coffee is a brewed beverage with a dark, slightly acidic flavor prepared from the roasted seeds of the coffee plant, called coffee beans. Green (unroasted) coffee is one of the most traded agricultural commodities in the world. Coffee can have a stimulating effect on humans due to its caffeine content. It is one of the most-consumed beverages in the world. On the other hand, Ampalaya, also known as Bitter Melon, is a crawling vine that grows well in tropical countries, particularly in the Philippines. Known for its bitter taste, the Ampalaya is at once a staple ingredient in Filipino and Asian cuisine and a reliable home remedy for various illnesses, particularly diabetes. Ampalaya contains a mixture of flavanoids and alkaloid that helps the Pancreas produce more insulin that controls the blood sugar in diabetics. Ampalaya is especially valued by diabetics for its known anti-diabetes. Several studies have shown that, aside from anti-diabetes, Ampalaya have a cholesterol-lowering effect and it is useful for preventing and treating malaria which is a rampant disease in the Philippines. The ampalaya seeds, which are the main ingredient of our study, are very abundant in the Philippines and are just being thrown away can now be made into coffee. Ampalaya coffee may sound weird but the outcome of the study might be successful. The result may discourage the use of commercial coffee that has no nutritive value and it can answer the serious need for a very economical, nutritious and at the same time a medicinal coffee.…
