Atticus is an individual who is one of the few who live by principle not on tradition. In the little town named Maycomb, tradition for most people meant prejudice, separation, and racism. Atticus Finch chose to fight against the old traditions of his own. "...several Maycomb townspeople who see through the fog of the past, and who act not on tradition but on principle." (Erisman 43). He beliefs that white or black should be treated with respect. He does not judge people by their beliefs because he understands that his beliefs are different than others. Atticus Finch is an extremely independent lawyer. He is defending Tom Robinson while the rest of Maycomb is against it. He never second guesses any of the decisions he commits. The way he parents Scout and Jem is different than other normal parents. He almost treats them like adults instead of children and never lies to them. Anything they ask, is answered with complete honesty. Atticus believes in justification and that everything should be fair. Even though the evidence is stacked up against Tom Robinson, Atticus does the best he can to defend an innocent man. Atticus is one of the only characters that aren’t racist, even when he goes to Helen’s house, which means he is the only white man to kindly spend time in a black community.…

As I am further reading To Kill a Mockingbird I begin to characterize Atticus. I characterize Atticus as a caring and wise individual. One of the first ways Atticus portrays himself as is caring. Atticus states “… I do my best to love everybody…” (Lee 144). From this statement I see that no matter what people say about him Atticus still tries his best to view people in a better…

with a temper, and always enjoys asking lots of questions. Atticus calmly takes a compassionate and patient approach to handling issues. He gets down to their level and speaks in a way that they can understand. Amazingly, he is able to resolve problems, big or small, with love and patience, while listening to everything they have to say. One example when Jem started to raise his voice and get flustered, Atticus said, ‘“ Whoa, son.” so gently that I was greatly heartened.”’ (96) No matter the conflict, Atticus maintains a gentle and patient attitude towards his kids that only results in grater love and respect for him.…

Atticus is a Christ like character because he is loving to his kids, Jem and Scout. This is just like Jesus He loves us and we are his children. This bible verse talks about how much Jesus loved us. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (New International Version, John 3:16) This verse explains us that Jesus loved us so much that he died, so we can get salvation. "Come here, Scout," said Atticus. I crawled into his lap and tucked my head under his chin. He put his arms around me and rocked me gently. “Atticus is a great father and a trait that represents him with his children is that he loves Jem and Scout a bunch.…

Atticus promised Scout that he would "go on reading with her every night" if she would "concede the necessity of going to school." Later on in the book, Lee infers that he kept his word. Uncle Jack promised Scout that he would not tell Atticus the real reason why Scout got into a fight with her cousin, Francis. Scout recalls, "I waited on tenderhooks, for Uncle Jack to tell Atticus my side of it" and she goes on to say that he was a "prince of a fellow not to let me down." One of the main ways Atticus and Uncle Jack differ is their views of fairness toward Scout and Jem. Uncle Jack's unfairness is indicated when he jumped to the wrong conclusion and just "lit right into" Scout without even giving her a chance to explain. Afterwards, Scout explains to Uncle Jack about Atticus's fairness when she says, "'when Jem and I fuss Atticus doesn't ever just listen to Jem's side of it, he hears mine too'". After hearing this, Uncle Jack realizes that he knows nothing about children and I think inside he admires Atticus. Through dialogue with Jack, Atticus also says, "'when a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness sake"¦children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, an evasion simply muddles the'". This reveals how Atticus is not only fair with his children physically, but also in a knowledgeable…

In conclusion, Atticus is an inspiring individual who plays an important role in To Kill a Mockingbird through the novel’s dialogue. All in all, Atticus Finch is freethinking and genuine; self-motivated when it comes to his duties; and wise with his words, especially to his children. Furthermore, Atticus’s significant personality effects the other character positively. The story would have been a lot different without Atticus’s influence as a force for…

Atticus is a good father to both Jem and Scout. During the course of the book Atticus has been blamed to not have been a good father to his children when he allows them to do what most parents would not allow. Such as allowing Scout to wear breeches as it shows “[Scout] could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches; when I said I could do nothing in a dress…” (Lee 83). This shows that people inside the family and outside the family want Scout to act like a lady and do what lady are suppose to be doing, not running around in boy pants. As it said “[Scout] could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches…” (Lee 83), this shows that Atticus is very worry or care much of what she does. Though it may show that Atticus is a bad father…

Unlike his brother, Atticus is an expert in dealing with little children. His wise and firm opinions and deeds have had great influence on the characters of Jem and Scout as the novel proceeds. Miss Maudie says that “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets”. He deals with Scout and Jem as if they are adults. For instance, he does not hesitate to answer Scout's question about the meaning of "rape", and he makes deals with his children and is committed to them. At the same time, Atticus understands that Jem and Scout are still children and they are bound to make childish mistakes. He finds excuses for their bad deeds and that makes him more patient with them than his sister Alexandra. For example, he says to her when she criticizes the language Scout uses that "bad language is a stage all children go through, and it dies with time when they learn they're not attracting attention with it." Atticus is eager to teach his children good values and practices through people’s mistakes and poor behaviour and their own mistakes in real life situations rather than by giving them instructions. He does not rebuke or punish Jem and Scout for attending the trial of Robison or for secretly following him to the jail where Robinson was kept. He is always aware of what his children secretly do. For example, he has known that it was Jem at whom Mr. Radely once shot his gun. Yet, he frequently draws their…

In the book it states, “He would be there all night, and he would be there when Jem woke up in the morning” (281). This helps show how much Atticus really does care for Jem. Atticus has made it clear that he is always there for his children and loves them very much. In “To Kill a Mockingbird” it asserts, “When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness sake, But don’t make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles em’” (Chapter 9). The evidence shows that Atticus believes that you should be open with your children and not let them become clueless. It shows that he really cares and loves for his children and is willing to share and inform them on personal topics. Another quote that supports the claim is, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” (chapter 11). This helps show that Atticus really cares and loves Jem enough to wait to give him something he really wants, a gun. He waited to help Them understand courage and the importance of embracing a gun. He wanted Jem to know that having a gun in his hand isn’t courage. He did this for the better of Jem. This helps demonstrate how…

Atticus does, however, prove to be a very good father. Whenever someone talks badly about her father, Scout will stand up to them and sometimes even do it violently. Everyone in the town, it seems, makes fun of Atticus because of the black American he is defending. They feel that he is a disgrace to his family and to the rest of the town. However, Atticus never lets that get to him, and he doesn’t want it to get to Scout either. When Scout asks her father about all of the bad things people are saying about him and the trial, he says “You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change… it’s a good one, even if it does resist learning.” (101)…
