Analysis Of Ashfall By Mike Mullin
Ashfall, by Mike Mullin, is the book that I read. The setting of the story takes place during modern-day times in Iowa and Illinois. The story is about the supervolcano under Yellowstone National Park erupting and what would happen to society after the event. The main character, Alex, tries to get to his family, who are away at his uncle’s farm during the eruption. The main characters are Alex, who is a 16-year-old boy, and Darla, who is a 17-year-old girl who Alex finds in the middle of the story when her mother and she help Alex after he is attacked. Darla lives on a farm with her mother, who is murdered, leaving Darla and Alex alone. Alex is a typical teenager who reflects on “simpler times” when he would argue with his mom over chores and the way his sister would annoy him. Throughout the story, the main conflict is man versus nature. After the eruption, Alex is trying to find his family and is attacked, starved, and barely survived at the end of this book. …show more content…
All of Alex’s conflicts start when the supervolcano erupts leaving an apocalyptic tragedy. Alex at the beginning is at home when his house caves in. He finds refuge with his neighbors until his neighbors shoot and kill the bandits, which results in Alex leaving and searching for his parents. Alex then later sees a man named Target, who attacks Alex and leaves him for dead when Alex refuses to join his gang. Alex wakes up on a farm and sees a girl named Darla. All is well until Target finds Alex and sexually assaults Darla’s mother and kills her. Alex and Darla escape and go to Warren, where they find Alex’s cousin, uncle, and his sister; his parents left to find him. Alex and Darla help around the house when Alex’s uncle breaks his leg. Alex gets his uncle to the doctors and decides he is going to find his parents, which sets up the conflict for the next book in the

The whole plot is just Brian tries to survive in the wilderness. It is very prominent in this book. Another theme is boy vs nature. It is similar to survival. Brian has to go against nature to survive. For example, he had to go against a tornado at the end. The way that he resolves the conflicts is he makes shelter and he just does whatever he can to survive. He ends up finding a transmitter and he gets rescued too. T hat is pretty much how the conflict gets resolved in the…

In the first book, Alex was lured by Blunt, the taskmaster of MI6, the spy agency, and Mrs. Jones, his assistant, into avenging his uncle’s murder. When he’d turned them down, they’d blackmailed him by telling him they would send him away to foster care instead of staying with Jack Starbright, his live-in keeper. Alex had reluctantly gone along with the opportunity to go on a mission. After a few weeks of intensive training, Alex went out into the field and proved himself to be a natural spy and survivor. After that mission, though, Alex told Blunt and Mrs. Jones that he never wanted to be a spy again.…

This novel has been oversimplified, attempting to make not only the setting but also the characters and plot simpler than what they really are. The color blue in the eyes is associated with the intelligence of someone in upper society, such as a doctor. The yellow of the spectacles is also a symbol of intellect as well as happiness and joy that someone of upper class society will obtain. The eyes on the billboard appear to be looking down upon the people of the “valley of ashes” in a disapproving way that a member upper class society may look at them. The impoverished people of the grey land use the billboard as an image of hope that one day they will obtain the intellect and joy of those who are more financially…
