But below his mask, he was brave. He was being abused by his father. He is the strongest out of all the greasers. He is a hero behind the mask. With all those cuts and wounds on him he didn’t care he wanted to save those kids in the church and he did. “if you can picture a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you'll have Johnny. He was the youngest, next to me, smaller than the rest, with a slight build.” (pg. 11.) This shows what is on the mask that Johnny wears. Johnny looked innocent all the time and the other greasers would protect him. They treated him like he was their little brother. “He had a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes, and that beating he got from the Socs didn't help matters. I used black for the other part of the mask to represent his actual mask to represent nervousness, how innocent he was, how he was abused by his dad, how he was quiet, and scared. I used red felt to represent death. He always wanted to die because he hated his life. I wanted to add red because he wanted to die but he realized that he didn’t want to die after he saved those children. He realized he hadn't done much at all. On the board I had one half white and the other black to represent the fun times he had in his life with the greasers (aka his brothers) and the black representing the tough times in his life. At the beginning of the book, Johnny was not confident at all and didn’t know how to stand up for himself. After he was jumped and hurt badly by those socs, he was carrying a knife everywhere he went which showed he was scared. He would go anywhere alone because he was scared that he was going to be hurt again. He was known as the “gang's pet.” He thought about killing himself in the beginning but that changes throughout the book.
