Jon Klassen has produced pictures that portray numerous feelings. He has used artistic mediums such as ink, watercolour, sponges and watercolour paper. Using the watercolour paper, he has neatly speckled ink in places to create texture, drawn with an ink pens the objects and outlines. He has also contrasted the places with watercolour to plain areas with just ink. Klassen has chosen cool and warm colours such as, orange, blue, red, pink, yellow and the shades white, black and grey to signify the contrast between light and dark and tension between Laszlo and ‘The Dark’. The page following the book’s title depicts a scene at sea. The whole image is washed with a dark blue from the sky to the ocean, and the crashing waves convey a menacing journey has taken place. At the bottom of the page, if one looks closely, it is evident that the bottom of the wooden raft has been drawn but blends into the rest of the image. This inclusion of the raft changes the perspective of the image as the responder is now been positioned as if they were looking out from the raft, the place of the Man. Stephan Crane accomplished this by researching firsthand accounts of soldiers, using unique writing styles and wisdom gleaned from prior events of his life. These helped him write “The Red”; the very first “real”…
Generally speaking, the purpose of most forms of artistic expression such as literary art, music, or art itself is a mode by which the author can express him/herself with. They use their respective skills and/or interests to convey feelings or thoughts on any given topic. Short fiction is by no means exempt from this. Many writers use their literary skills to express dreams, aspirations, opinions, or even political viewpoints. In order to make a dertermination of a probable origin for a story, research into the authors life and beliefs most likely will prove benefical. With this in mind, Abe Kobo’s story “The Red Cocoon” seems to be a prime example of an author expressing his political viewpoints and his personal conflicts with society through literature. Given this, researching his life and political stance might help to support or negate such an assumption.…
