Analyzing W. W Jacobs 'Short Story The Monkey's Paw'
The short story ¨The monkey´s paw¨ by W.W Jacobs, would make a great movie. The story is about a magical charm, a monkey´s paw that is brought home into the White family by Sergeant Major Morris. The paw has the ability to grant 3 wishes to 3 different people. The story is very suspenseful. That would make it easier to grab the audience attention. The book would not be able to grab the attention of the audience as much as the movie would.

The author uses many descriptive words to describe the story and its setting. This makes the movie more interesting. An example from the story is when the author writes ´Without, the night was cold and wet.¨ Imagine that and seeing it in the movie. If that was in the movie it would make the audience more

Why is it that when a book gets it’s own movie that there are several differences between the book and the movie? Some people argue that the book is always better than the movie. There is a reason for this. Firstly, in most book to movie adaptations small details are changed or are just not included. Secondly, the movie often takes short cuts and doesn’t touch on certain aspects that were described in the book. Lastly, when reading a book you are free to make your own subtext and fill in the blanks with your imagination. The movie adaptations of books have always lacked the detail that's in the book, some things are completely cut from the movie to maintain a well paced story, and it fills in the gaps for us making the experience less unique.…

In, “The Monkey’s Paw” by W. W. Jacobs, Mr. White’s actions towards the monkey’s paw is very suspicious. He is suspicious because when the sergeant threw the monkey’s paw in the fire, Mr. White quickly pulled it out. “White...stooped down and snatched it off.” This proved that Mr. White believed in the three wishes the paw would bring them. Mr. White could’ve let the paw burn but instead, he snatched it out. He could’ve listened to the sergeant or this horrible stuff would’ve happened to them.…

One thing in particular that the book does much better is making use of complex metaphors and themes, such as: the river for life, and oneness with nature, that string themselves together as you turn each page of the book, while in the movie the metaphors and symbolism are represented in a much different way through picture. In the book, both themes regarding the river are very vivid and clear, as they use strong imagery of nature to draw pictures in the minds of the readers. In the movie both themes are represented and referred to much less because of the lack of narration.…

Why I think the moviemaker chose those difference between the book and the movie was because in the book there was a narrator to tell you specific things. The narrator is there to tell some background information and make sure you get a better grasp of what’s taking place. So I feel as if in the movie they wanted you to pay closer attention to what was happening. And you have to have some differences between the two. While in the movie you can see more action and can sometimes explain things better by acting out, rather than being written out.…

Movies have long been struggling to capture a book in pictures and sound and have long been failing. So much more can be put into a few pages of a book than ten minutes of a movie, and books can be much longer without the author worrying about the reader losing interest. Anyone who has read and liked the book before going to see the movie will automatically find the book to be far better than the movie simply because the movie is forced to leave out many of what the reader considers to be key aspects in the book. This doesn’t mean that the movie is bad, only that it can’t portray the story well enough to suit the avid reader. Unfortunately, movies will never be able to portray a book with any sort of competence or inspire the same sort of devotion in the reader.…
