The Summer Olympics have been going on for thousands of years. These games have been bringing people together from many parts of the world. People have been gathering for this event since 776 B.C. Many people have competed and have won several awards. The first Olympic games dated back to 776 B.C. The games started out with only 1 event called “Stade”. Many people competed nude. Married women were not allowed to watch or go to the events but, unmarried women were allowed to and were sat next to the altar for fertility. There was also a separate game for women called “Flevaig”. Spartan women were encouraged to participate in sports to birth strong children.
The Olympics games honored many gods like Zeus. During 1896, the first modern games began. These games took place in Athens, Greece. In the modern games The games usually lasted about 17 days through July and October. As many as 1 billion watch on television around the world. Almost 10,500 athletes compete in 41 sports. In the ancient Olympics there was only a running race for the first 13 games. Soon they added more and more events to compete in. In the modern Olympics there are about 41 events to compete in. The most popular ones are volleyball and basketball. One of the running events is called hurdles. Women and men have to jump over ten hurdles. Women only have to run a 100m, while men have to run a 110m. Some other running events are long and medium distance. Long distance consists of a 5,000m, 10,000m, and a marathon.
