Ancient Romans were the first to invent and use concrete for buildings and other architectural use. It put them ahead of other empires due to the fact that they could now use concrete to create and make buildings stronger and able to support more weight. Concrete is the reason domes are made possible today. The Romans were the first society to manufacture roads for military purposes. “All roads lead to Rome” is an expression used to show how every road in Europe branches out of Rome. We still use most Roman inventions today. Han China, on the other hand, also greatly benefited the world with the creation of many smaller but still widely used items. The wheelbarrow, for example, may not have had a huge impact on society at the time, but still we use it for many tasks today. The Chinese in the Han Empire also invented paper which is…

The Romans were the first civilisation to build straight roads throughout their empire. This was extremely effective, as they could quickly move troops to a invasion by the barbarians. These roads were also very helpful to move goods around the empire quickly and effectively. As the Roman empire was an empire with lots of trade, this was perhaps the most important factor to keep the trade going. As well as this, if part of the empire became rebellious, it would not take long for some soldiers to go and break it…
Rome also built such many triumphal arches that can be seen throughout Italy (ancient.eu, nd). The most impressive one that we all known is the Pantheon, a huge achievement in architectural design that can be made possible by these wonderful Roman inventions. In normal life, arches were used everywhere in road and passageway construction. Also, large insulae was only made possible when concrete was found, and it, in turn, put the first block on modern apartment models (bbc.com,…
Technology is the building block of any society: it allows for new advancements to be made that improve daily life. Two such societies that made advancements in technology included the Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire. As the expansion of the empire increased, the Romans built roads that linked these regions together. These roads were built in such a way that allowed for easier travel: roads were paved and allowed for water to run off. In addition, the empire also developed the transportation of water throughout the city through the construction of aqueducts, which were canals. Likewise, the Han Dynasty made advancements in the distribution of water: there were water ways, canals, and pools that were inspected by hydraulic engineers. Water was also used to power a blowing-engine. Because of the advancements that were made, the Han Dynasty is regarded by historians as the “Golden Age.” Similarly, the Romans created a large empire that stretched from Europe to the Middle East. Because of the vastness of both empires, water and technology were heavily relied upon, yet unlike the Han officials, the upper-class Romans had a negative attitude towards technology.…
Roman technology was and important part of the Roman life and made a huge difference when many of the technologies were discovered. One of the huge technologies that they had was their concrete. Concrete were a huge part of the building and paving of streets. This was a huge step and helped move the army quickly across the country when it needed to be. It also connected them from one city to another easily in order to make trading better. Building roads made things a lot easier. We would get nowhere in today’s world without roads. Roads that we have run everywhere, from one side of the U.S. to the other. So looking back on ancient history without the Romans starting concrete and making roads who knows when it would have come along and what we would have today. Not only was the concrete used for roads but it was also used for the making of buildings, baths, walls, aqueducts, arches, bridges, and much more.…
The Romans seemed to have done well for themselves when it came to technology and engineering. Perhaps, you can say that they have a “knack” for it. The had created so many things from water lines to engineering roads in order to make it easier to get from place to place rather than having to either go by ship or by foot.…
Many people believe that the magnetic compass is one of the most important inventions ever created, next to penicillin and the panini maker. It turns out that there is an entire story that lies behind this marvelous invention’s history and how it works. When most people think about a compass, they think of “that thing that shows which way is north”. But the truth is that it’s much, much more than that. This is an example of how much we take the things we have today for granted.…
According to historians, history started about 5500 years ago in Western Asia. This is the span of recorded history, which was possible with Cuneiform, a writing system by a people known as the Sumerians. Writing systems were developed because people needed a way to record and remember things. Signs were written with a reed stylus on pillow-shaped tablets, which were usually just a few inches long. When I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I saw a few Cuneiform tablets.…

In ancient China, the earliest literary reference to magnetism lies in a 4th-century BC book named after its author, The Master of Demon Valley (鬼谷子): "The lodestone makes iron come or it attracts it."[5] The earliest mention of the attraction of a needle appears in a work composed between AD 20 and 100 (Louen-heng): "A lodestone attracts a needle."[6] The Chinese scientist Shen Kuo (1031–1095) was the first person to write of the magnetic needle compass and that it improved the accuracy of navigation by employing the astronomical concept of true north (Dream Pool Essays, AD 1088), and by the 12th century the Chinese were known to use the lodestone compass for navigation. They sculpted a directional spoon from lodestone in such a way that the handle of the spoon always pointed south.…
