The road to happiness is full of setbacks. He lost his car, his wife left him, he became homeless, he was broke, his business didn't really work out, he had to look after his son himself. The frustrations were endless. He did not give up despite of all these encounters. He was willing to keep on going, he was willing to face another rejection from another doctor who might not buy his bone density machine, he was willing to take the risk to become an intern at the Dean Witter company even though he was not paid, he was still willing to attend the interview for the stock broker intern position even though he had spent the previous night in jail. He never quit as resilient in that he seem to know how to bounce back from life’s difficulties. Ann

Masten and R.-G. Reed (2002) define resilience as a “pattern of positive adaption in the face of significant adversity or risk”. Sometimes we have to take a step back in order to take a step forward. He was telling his wife in the movie that he was doing an internship for a stock brokerage company, she responded by saying that "sales man to intern is a step backward". Sometimes you need to take that step backward, if what you are presently doing isn't yielding the results you want then you might have to take a step back. You might have to change career and go back to school, you might have to learn a new trade and start as a trainee. Do not let pride and the opinions of people stop you, if that's what you need to do to make progress and have a better future then do it. Another lesson I learnt from Pursuit of Happiness is that it is never too late to start something new. The character Will Smith played in the movie was already in his 40's when he started the internship at the stock brokerage firm. Age did not impede him to compete for the position as people who is competing with him is half his age. Age is just a number, do not make petty excuses such as “too old” or “too young” to start something, it is the thought that counts, not age.
In a nutshell, the hope theory that applied by Chris Gardner, the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation that engaged him to pursue his goals, the positive coping skills that he adapt when facing difficulties in life and lastly the resilience character that he showed in the movie tells us that life has ups and downs, it is like a wave.
Imagine that your life has no downside, what is the meaning of living then. There are always various of hardship we have to go through in life to achieve our desire goals. Happiness in life is easier to achieve if you face all the hardship in life with a positive attitudes and never give up easily on what you want. You should see the difficulties in life as a testing and training that given by God to train us to become a better person, to enhance personal well-being, to achieve full life, as the meaningful quotes said by Chris Gardner in the movie,“The future was uncertain, absolutely, and there were many hurdles, twists, and turns to come, but as long as I kept moving forward, one foot in front of the other, the voices of fear and shame, the messages from those who wanted me to believe that I wasn't good enough, would be stilled.” This movie bring a message about fighting for your passions and for what you love despite your own hardships. It goes to show that if you dedicate yourself to your passions and you work hard through the tough times, you will come out successful in the end. As the saying goes, treat failure as a stepping stone to
success.
