In “The Danger of a Single Story,” Adichie talks about stereotypes, or single stories. Adichie explains social class and stereotypes. Adichie explains social class by telling the story of Fide, her family’s houseboy. Fide and his family were very poor compared to Adichie’s middle class family, and Adichie also explained that her mother would use Fide as a reference to poor people, for example, when Adichie would not finish her food, her mother would say, “don’t you know people like Fide’s family have nothing.” So Adichie talks about how even in places like Nigeria, there is social class and that not everyone is poor like most people think. Adichie also talks about single stories, or stereotypes. First she explains how all the books she read as a child were…
First, Melinda’s phase of depression takes her to her art class, as an escape from reality and the harsh comments thrown at her. At first she was hesitant about drawing trees for her art project but when she started, her first few were all hit by lightning and nearly dead, which symbolize her fearful emotions. Although she tried to talk, no one listened to her. “I can’t tell them what really happened. I can’t even look at that part of myself” (p.28). That is, she could not tell them anything because she was afraid of being judged. Since she judges herself; she thinks others will definitely judge her the same way. Jennifer fells the tears coming, and this time she can’t stop them. She sits down on the little platform in front of the mirror and cries” (135). Jennifer has always been a strong-minded person, but when she steps out of her comfort zone to fit in and get humiliated it is hard to regain that confidence. Jennifer has always been judge behind her back, but never to her face. She knows she is ugly, but she just wanted to feel pretty for once. Just like all the other girls in her school. “It is freshman year all over again. Only this time Jennifer wouldn’t be blindsided. This time, she knows she’s the ugliest girl in the room” (330). Jennifer tried fitting in with her old friends only to embarrass herself again but this time at homecoming. She changed what she wants to fit in with then only to get rejected again. By this time I assume she was about eighteen years old. Her daily routine had not changed much. She still read or wrote every day. The only thing that changed was her age and attitude. By the time she reached this age, she had written three books, each telling wonderful stories. These stories are what changed her attitude. She lost some of her depression through words. Lisel spent more time outdoors, interacting with a few people. All I can say is that I am amazed by words, and how much of an effect they have on…
