Argumentative Essay: Abolishing The Penny
We all know the penny, it is similar to the avocado due to the fact they both should be eliminated, but are still here today. The avocado should have been eliminated because its survival depended on the giant armadillo, and the penny should be eliminated because of inflation. Pennies should be abolished because it costs more to make than it is worth, we already abolished a coin without bad side effects, and most arguments against it have solutions.
First, the penny costs more to produce than it is worth. The penny costed 1.8 cents to make in 2010, and 4 billion pennies were made, so money was squandered. As mentioned before, half cents retained their worth and could be used as they were before, but when used would be sent back to the government to be melted down. The pennies would follow suit, similar to the half cent’s process. Therefore, pennies would retain their value. Also, some may say, abolishing the penny is discourteous to Abraham Lincoln. However, this is not true, because we have the $5 bill and the US military already abolished the penny in overseas bases. “In the 1980s, U.S. military bases overseas banned the penny and began rounding all transactions up or down to the nearest five cents. This is the system Canada plans to implement later this year” (History.com). This quote is showing that the US military already abolished the penny, and our neighbor to the north already abolished the penny, too. Therefore, abolishing the penny is not disrespectful to Abraham Lincoln.
