The threat to Harold was real or as real as his life with paranoia. The reader can feel threat to our hero from first page of the story. When Harold saw the bikers at their dark wearing he understood that they carrying danger for him. The description of bikers given us in dark tone. They grease and hung hairs, they black vests creates bad atmosphere. He preferred to see them go .Why did he think so about them? He felt anxiety when one of them raised his hand pointed two fingers like pistol and pretended to shoot. At first reader can think that the action was childish and there is nothing dangerous from bikers. But this situation reminded to Harold one event from his childhood when kids from public school shifted him and then beat. Before that moment he had not learned about fear. But after he did. He learned to be more carefully to save his life, he learned to fear .On the other hand Harold has his psychological problem, he met with psychiatrist every week. And his illness imagination helps him to live. He speaks with himself he lives alone. Only his psychiatrist knew about his problems. The nature and the weather at the story also helps as to understand all the situation. The gloomy silent dark environment assists the situation. Around Harold forest was silent. No bird called, not an animal moved. The moss deadened everything muted it. This all together make him decision to leave them, because he has fear because it was nature of his illness.
