From this perspective it is considered social inequality. The americans who are affected by this the most are the “working-poor”. The working poor consist of immigrants, minorities, single parents, minimal skilled, and less educated. This social problem is forcing individuals into poverty; therefore, without federal assistance the society is unable to address the wage inequality.
The functionalist perspective on the issue is that society would be returning to normal post recession. They believe that the unemployment rates will rise because they cost for workers will increase. By giving the people more money who need it most is allowing them to spend more money; therefore, putting it back into the economy. The Economic Policy Institute made a statement saying that if the United States minimum wage were to increase from $7.25 per hour to $10.10 per hour it would increase the economy net by 22.1 billion , and create 85,000 new employment opportunities over the span of three years. Another pro to increasing the minimum wage rate is that it will reduce the poverty level because now people are able to afford homes that are not in those urban areas. A higher minimum wage will reduce government welfare spending. If lower income workers now have more money they are going to become less dependent on government assistance. According to The Economic Policy Institute by increasing the minimum wage to $10.10, more than 1.7 million Americans would no longer be dependent on government assistance programs. This is exactly what America needs because we have way too many americans relying on government assistance programs.
