There comes a time in every young American’s life when he or she must make the decision to further their education, or enter the workforce. This decision can have an outstanding effect on a student’s right to their pursuit of happiness. Higher education opens new doors for Americans providing them with opportunity and success. Completion of secondary education is a necessity because it provides job security, higher pay, networking, and an open-minded individual, but there are many factors that could prevent someone from this goal. Louisiana recently fell victim to an oil field crash, many of these oilfield workers who obtained no post-secondary education had trouble finding work due to that lack of education and vocational experience. Higher education provides an individual with appropriate networking skills and flexibility to handle situations such as this. Proper communication skills that will come in handy when developing business relationships, skills such as verbal communication, proper presentation, grammar, and social skills can all be obtained through a secondary education. [In Pharinets paper he says, “There exist students who are not yet ready for the academic and financial challenges of college”] Public education systems are the main offenders. Primary education is every child’s right, yet is every primary education equal? Not so much, [Margaret A Miller] speaks on how “gifted and talented” students absorb a disproportionate amount of a schools’ resources. Unfortunately, the quality of the school/education is based the location. Primary schools should be viewed as our nations builders for they mold the minds of our youth. We need to address the issue at its roots, students are not obtaining the proper knowledge and resources necessary to pursue higher education. During my high school years, I witnessed this unfairness first hand watching as teachers passed students whom did not earn the grade. By educators doing so they are setting the students up for failure further down the road, if said student decided to attend secondary school he/she would already be two steps behind the rest of his/her classmates. Resources are also spread very thin; each high school grade level has one councilor assigned. With each grade level comprised of 300+ it is illogical for one to correctly advise that volume of students on the proper steps and options for secondary
