Arleen Polito Memorial Scholarship Essay
Arleen Polito Memorial Scholarship As a student-athlete itself, I have a pretty unique high school experience. Over the past 4 years, I have learned how to manage my time better, how to get things done in a timely fashion, as well as how to efficiently multi-task. However, to even further my unique high school experience, I am also a dedicated member of the marching band (and I hold the title of Trombone section leader), concert band, jazz band, concert choir, and spring musical, all while also being dedicated to field hockey. Although these choices stressed me out to no end due to multiple practices, competitions, and games being scheduled all at the same time, I would not have given up this experience for anything. It helped me to grow as a student, as an athlete, as a musician, and most importantly, as a person. …show more content…
I had joined my church youth choir and loved every moment of it. Then, once middle school came I decided I wanted to continue my music education by joining the band playing the trombone. The next year I decided to try out for the middle school field hockey team and made it. I continued with band and field hockey until my freshman year of high school when I had the intentions of quitting field hockey in order to pursue marching band because no one had ever done both before. I soon came to my senses and decided that not only was I going to continue with both band and field hockey, but I was also going to be the first person to successfully do that. On top of this, I decided I would audition for the school musical and jazz ensemble which would also overlap with the end of the marching band and field hockey seasons. Through much communication with my coaches and band directors, and musical directors I was able to accomplish this for all four years of my high school career and I wouldn't have had it any other

For seven years I have been part of some sort of musical group. Instrumentally I embarked on my musical journey by joining orchestra in fourth grade on the cello, and then trumpet from fifth grade until now, where I participate in as many band events as I can. One of my most defining experiences to date has been my involvement with the colorguard squad at my school. The colorguard squad is an auxiliary unit that is part of the marching band. We perform with the band at Friday night football games during halftime while spinning flags and rifles to the music. To me, colorguard is so much more than that. Freshman year when I went to tryouts I was terrified. I did not have any friends trying out with me; I was walking into a gym full of older girls whom I had never met. To my surprise, being on the squad for the past three years has been such a defining achievement during high school for me. Without the squad I would have had a completely different experience in school. I learned the value of hard work…

I loved to sing as well and learned how to control my voice. Eighth grade came and I joined the show choir, I danced as well as sang but I soon learned that I wasn't the best dancer so I decided in ninth grade to stick to singing. In ninth grade I also joined the marching band playing the 4th bass drum (which is the largest one). I loved marching and playing, going to competitions and learning new pieces, going to football games, all of it was wonderful. I came to love the ringing in my ears from the loud sound of our band. While I was in marching band I was also in the percussion band (which was an…

Tennis and marching band are two extracurricular activities that require both dedication and commitment. Prior to entering my first year of high school, I decided that I wanted to take my love for tennis to the next level and make the O’Fallon high school tennis team. In 5th grade, I committed myself to playing the alto saxophone in the school band and all that entails with lessons and practice, with an eye on playing in the high school marching band. During high school, I made a commitment to participate in the Rose Bowl Parade in California. After making that decision, I found out I made the tennis team. Practicing both these activities in the summer and playing during the fall semester put me at odds with my parents on what should come first tennis or band. The amount of time needed for both activities to succeed was monumental and would be an uphill battle compared to the actual time I had. This caused internal conflict knowing that one will not get as much attention as the other. At that moment, I decided to come up with a solution to my problem then put it into action. One way or another I had developed two answers. I realized to become good at band and tennis something had to change.…

For many, high school is the last place where they will play a sport at a competitive level alongside their peers. Many may refer to this as their "glory days" as they don't intent to play in college and look for other ways to spend their time. Since I'm attending a school where there are no sports teams on my campus, I realized there were a few areas of high school sports that I miss. These are a few of those things.…

Starting off with the end of eighth grade year is when I realized how much my life would change after one decision. My small group of friends consisted of them being in band. I’ve always been a shy person when it comes to meeting new people which is why I never tried out. I remember seeing posters announcing to come try out for color guard which is a performing arts program during marching season in high school. I had a couple of friends who were convincing me to join since that would mean we would all be in band. My best decision was going to try out and making the team.…

In high school, the only sport-like activity I participated in was color guard in the marching band, mostly because it consumed all of my time. We have tryouts and we start preparing in March and throughout the summer for competitions starting in September. It’s an immense commitment and I believe that you really have to love it, and I did.…

During my freshman year of high school, my soccer experience was permanently reshaped. Our team had lost its goalie. Our team needed to either recruit a new goalie, or find an existing team member to fill that position. Prospects did not look good, so I volunteered to take the goalie spot. Though I had played soccer for many years, this was my first year playing the goalkeeper position. I had no idea what I was getting myself into; I had acted on behalf of the team and our collective need. At first, I was very nervous about playing goalie. This nervousness quickly diminished when I realized that I had a natural talent for playing goalkeeper. I was shocked, relieved, and proud by my innate ability to play my new position. I am so happy that I took the risk, experience playing, because I have played that position ever since, and I truly love it. With my hard work, I am getting better each day, step by step.…

Throughout middle school, most of my time was devoted to two activities: soccer and band. I love both and took every opportunity to play. Thankfully, my coaches understood, and in the rare case of practice overlap, they were quite considerate of my split devotion. Then came high school. Soccer began early June with practice every morning. Marching band began in mid-July with two straight weeks of eight hours of practice a day then occasional evening practices. School began and soccer practice was held after school every day. If there was an away game, I played for both the junior varsity and varsity teams. Band practice was four days a week and lasted longer than soccer. Competitions were only on weekends, but the buses always left by eight…

Due to the nature of my school in the Philippines, I almost skipped a grade: I was half a credit short of doing so. The thought of that surprised me, but I felt excited to start my school year in the US. During the first two days of school, I was able to make my first Filipino friend: we both had birthdays in April, and we arrived in the US one month apart, which was very coincidental. During the school year, I also joined choir, and my passion for singing became ignited. Coming from a science high school, I didn’t have many opportunities to pursue the arts as the school focused on math and science. Going to choir was fun: we practiced for about an hour, and we sang a variety of musical pieces throughout the entire year. The camaraderie that I had with my friends in choir was enjoyable, and I was happy that I was able to tell it to my friends, and encourage them to come. It felt like I was part of something big, and something very…
