Armadillium Vulgare Experiment Report
Introduction This experiment took place to observe Armadillium vulgare, better known as pill bugsand sow bugs. They are cannibalistic, being both the cleanup crew and their own children eaters, as well as eating decomposers. Pill bugs, formally called Isopods, aren’t actually bugs at all. They’re crustaceans with gills in their rear abdomen, with seven jointed legs on either side. When ill their blood will turn blue due to the amount of hemocyanin found in their regular blood cells, and when threatened, these Isopods will curl up into a rolled ball as their line of defense against any predators. It was observed that when given a stimulus, the Isopods would most likely be kinesis, rather than taxis due to that they appear to move in an unorganized path. Unfortunately, they only live for approximately two to three years. In this lab Isopods were examined by their different types of behavior. The experiment began with observing the Isopods and then, moving on to how they’d react to having a side of moisture in their double-sided dry petri dish. In the independent experiment, a side of light and dark was set up to test how the Isopod’s behavior would be effected by having a side of darkness versus being exposed to the artificial light in the classroom. It was gathered in the independent experiment, that the tested Isopods did, indeed, favor the darkness more than those who found in the lighter side. Besides a surprise baby shower, no pun intended, the results that were gathered appeared to be just the same as they were theorized would happen. The experiment involving the observations of the Isopods when added to a side of moisture and dry, led to the results of the Pill bugs appearing to favor the wet side.
