Why Is Pillbug Attracted To Cornstarch
The Rolling Choice A pillbug also known as a roly-poly is a small land creature that is often found in many areas around the world. They prefer moist areas often living in soil, under rocks, and dead logs. The pillbug which is an isopod begins its life as a tiny egg and as it grows it sheds its old exoskeleton 4 to 5 times. A pillbug consists of three basic body parts, the head, thorax, and the abdomen. Pillbugs eat decaying plants and animals as well as some living plants. The purpose of this experiment was to learn how to demonstrate the scientific method and to learn if pillbugs are attracted to cornstarch. In this experiment I hypothesize that if a pillbug is exposed to cornstarch and sand then the pillbug will spend more time near the …show more content…

The wooden crate was used to hold the pillbug and the substances being tested.
• Two 5x2 cardboard pieces. The cardboard was used as a divider to separate the pillbug and substances.
• One scoop of cornstarch
• One scoop of sand The experiment was conducted in five trials. The pillbugs attraction to the substance was measured by the amount of time within one minute the pillbug was in the substance. Inside the crate the sand was placed on the left side followed by a cardboard divider and the cornstarch was placed on the right side followed by a divider, leaving a neutral spot in the middle where the pillbug was placed for one minute after each trial. In the first trial the pillbug was exposed to cornstarch. The second trial the pillbug was exposed to sand. The third trial the pillbug was exposed to both substances. The fourth trial the substances were switched to opposite sides and the pillbug was exposed to both. The final trial the pillbug was exposed to cornstarch.
Trial One 8:46am-8:47am The pillbug was exposed to cornstarch. The pillbug walked through the cornstarch and spent 15 seconds in the cornstarch and the remainder of the time away from the

Initially the pillbug went to the cornstarch and stayed in the cornstarch for 10 seconds. After leaving the cornstarch the pillbug stayed in a neutral position for 15 seconds. Finally, the pillbug spent the remainder of the time in the sand. (35 seconds)
Trial Four 8:57am-8:58am Substances were placed on opposite sides; the sand was on the right and the cornstarch on the left. The pillbug was exposed to both substances; the pillbug went immediately to the right spending 45 seconds on the sand. The rest of the time the pillbug was walking within the crate trying to crawl up the sides of the crate, not recognizing either substance.
Trial Five 9:00am-9:01am In the final trial the pillbug was exposed to cornstarch. The pillbug spent 6 seconds on the cornstarch and for the remainder of the time the pillbug was trying to climb out of the

For future references what we could do to improve out methods of conducting this experiment is after each trial we should clean the choice tube to make sure there is no residue, which can cause miscalculations. Though the whole experiment we used different sizes of isopods. Maybe next time we can stick to one size throughout the whole experiment or we could do these trials by size. Preform the same trial a few times using different of pill bugs and see if the size of the pill bugs has anything to do with their…

For this project I had observed the coolest bug balls on earth, the roly- poly. They are commonly known as the roly-poly, also pill bug, and wood lice. Its scientific name is Armadilidum vulgare. It is actually not an insect, it is an isopod ( a type of arthropod). It’s genus is Armadilidum, it’s Phylum is Arthopoda, and Subphylum is Crustacea. I have observed that the exoskeleton is a blue-gray, it is an invertebrate, it’s mouth, antennae and eyes are located on it’s head, and it rolls into a perfect sphere as defense when being disturbed or threatened. It has 2 pairs of antennae (one barely visible), it has 2 eyes, it has 7 pairs of jointed legs, and it’s about 3/8 inches long.…

The children in the unreliable environment waited for 3 minutes while the children were able to wait for 12 minutes. Most of the children said they would wait, when the researchers asked them if they will wait or not. Some of them failed in doing so, because they could not resist the pull of temptation for even a minute. So as soon as the researcher left the room to get the other treat, they immediately consumed the marshmallow.…

Medicine is used on people and animals everyday, and depending on how they are depends on how it reacts. Since Benadryl is the most common medicine and it’s known to be safe for dogs and cats, it should be safe for hamsters if properly administered to the hamster and the dose is correct. Benadryl is known for having different reactions, it can make the consumer hypoactive or hyperactive. The experiment will be conducted by testing the speed of the Hamster through the obstacle course with different amounts of Benadryl in the hamsters system.…

The pile of M&M’s represents the phytoplankton population in a lake. The printed “M” on the candy represents the amount of DDT (in ppm) the algae ingested from pesticide runoff from a nearby agricultural area. There are 100 M&M’s in the pile. Each circle below represents on phytoplankton. Mark the amount of toxin each phytoplankton has ingested. If there is a full “M” stamped on the candy then that phytoplankton has ingested 1 ppm of DDT, so write “1” in one of the circles below. If there is no “M” on the candy then that phytoplankton did not ingest any DDT so write a “O” in one of the circles below. If there is a partial “M” on the candy then estimate how much of the “M” there is. For example, if there is only on hump of the “M” then that would equal ½ a unit of DDT ingested by that phytoplankton so you would fill in one of the circles below with ½.…

To begin this experiment the marshmallow test must be administered to the kids and the results must be recorded. We then separate the kids into two different groups. One of the groups will be the control group where the kids will be allowed to play freely. The second group will be the experimental group; this is the where the kids will have to follow a special set of instructions to play games. While the control group in the room next door is playing, a few teachers will then give out instructions to the experimental group. The teachers will divide the kids into groups of four; each…

Introduction: Coccinellidae, which is more familiar known as the ladybug, comes from a family of small beetles. However, one may jump to conclusions after hearing their names, but ladybugs are not all females! Their color ranges from a red to a reddish-orange and even to a yellow color along with black spots on their hard-shell wing covers. Even though they are small bugs, they are very predatory. The ladybug’s mouth includes mandibles which is another word for their strong jaws (Hussain, et al., 2014).…
