“The Art of War” by Sun Tzu is one of the most influential books worldwide and is considered the most important work on military theory. It was written by Sun Tzu, more than 2500 years ago, possibly in the 6th Century BC. Along with the Terra Cotta army and the works of Confucius, The Art of War is one of the best pieces of work in any field to come out of thousands of years of innovative Chinese history. The strategic and philosophical ideas descried within are applied in various fields today including military, sports, political and business. The book is composed of 13 chapters, each of which focuses on a different aspect of war. It’s a smart book and also poetic, repetitive and arcane. The first two chapters and the final one concentrate on positional strategy, the methods for mapping the relative strength and weakness of competitive positions. The middle chapters concentrate on expansion strategy, which identifies and explores opportunities to advance and build up positions. The penultimate section of the book explores a situation response, which specifies the responses required to address specific competitive situations.
Sun Tzu was a Chinese military general, strategist and philosopher who lived in “Spring and Autumn Period” of ancient China. His birth name was Sun Wu and is best known by “Master Sun”. He has had a significant impact on Chinese and Asian history and culture, both as the author of The Art of War and as a legendary history figure. Sun Tzu’s work has been praised and employed throughout East Asia since its composition.
