I have selected a service user within my previous work placement and in line with The Data Protection Act 1998 to protect the confidentiality of my service user I will identify her with a different name. Carol is a 28 years old female who was born with Spina bifida which has resulted in her suffering from total paralysis of the legs and has also affected her bowels and ability to urinate leaving her doubly incontinent and dependant on catheterisation, Carol uses an electric wheelchair to enable her mobility and requires 2:1 care with daily living activities involving personal care, as well as her physical disability Carol also has learning disabilities due to a diagnosis …show more content…
In someone such as Carol there is various support methods required in order to meet her basic needs in all aspects of her life such as Socially, Physically, Emotionally, Cognitively and Culturally. There are several different professional agencies involved in the care and well-being of Carol’s life and as she has a wide range of complex needs it is vital that all agencies and family members involved in her care can collaborate effectively as a team using their individual expertise to ensure her needs are being met and to identify any changes that may occur such as health deteriorating resulting in more physical and emotional support to Carol and her family. In Carol’s situation as mentioned earlier Carol likes to maintain as much independence as possible and although this is beneficial to Carol’s physical and emotional development, some daily living tasks can prove quite difficult for her with potential to cause injury to her. Carol’s family remain firm on their decisions that support with these tasks are limited in order to promote her independence, which can be a cause for concern to the care professionals supporting Carol as they have a duty of care to protect Carol and maintain her safety in-line with the service policies and legal requirements such as the Codes of practice set by the SSSC which states “ As a social service worker, you must promote the independence of a service user while protecting them as far as possible from danger or harm.”(SSSC 2009) In the situation of Carol there were incidents which occurred during tasks which her family clearly specified she wasn’t to be supported with, this resulted in Carol suffering from a significant burn to her legs, following incidents such as this care professionals would need to assess the risks of such tasks and accurately record the outcome of the assessment, a detailed account this and of the incidents and resulting
