FACTS
Luke is an employee for the ABC Company. He is asked to designate a development project that involves constructing an adult entertainment facility on the same block where his brother, Owen, lives. Owen is looking to sell his house since he was offered a more than decent price for it from a prospect. However, Owen has no idea that his brother is working on the business on its way to his doorstep in a matter of months or that it is even coming—period. Luke knows that having a place like this next door will not draw people into the neighborhood, and he knows that his brother’s house will be devalued as soon as word gets out.
ISSUE
Luke’s ties with his brother and the ABC Company create a conflict of interest. Luke has a responsibility to his company to keep the information he knows under wraps, but he also has a duty to his family. He might think he owes his brother that much. Even if Luke’s boss never finds out that Luke told Owen, inside Luke knows that it breaks the confidentiality between them. Luke has to make a decision.

Who is to say that everyone will treat someone else or even wants to be treated with dignity and respect? Some people do not care and will use it as an excuse to essentially abuse someone.
If Luke makes the golden rule a priority, first we would have to find out if Luke even prefers to be treated fairly. If honesty is important to Luke, he would never tell his brother. But if Luke feels that trust is more important, he may reconsider and end up telling Owen. The point is that the golden rule all depends on how ethical a person
