Authoritative Parenting Style: How Does It Effect Adolescent Development? Multiple studies have been conducted in the correspondence between child development, and the authoritative parenting style. The authoritative parenting style is defined as a “more moderate approach that emphasized setting high standards, being nurturing and responsive, and showing respect for children as independent, rational being. The authoritative parent expects maturity and cooperation, and offers children lots of emotional support,” (Dewar, G. 2013). As a review, authoritative parenting is giving the child rules, but being open for debate and having high levels of responsiveness for the children. All of these things that have been mentioned may seem small in the child’s life up until emerging adulthood, actually have the biggest impacts on the child’s future. Authoritative parenting definitely has a progressive impact over the development of the child. By living under an authoritative parenting style, the child will most likely grow to be highly successful in their future endeavors. They will also grow up to be mentally, emotionally, academically, and socially prosperous. It is critical to remember that even if you do not think of your parenting style every day, what you do and how you raise your children impacts them as a whole from when they are born, to when they die. Children that are raised in an authoritative environment are more likely to develop skills that will aid them in situations and make responsible decisions later on in adulthood. Of course parenting styles change throughout the life of the child, and it may also differ in parents. The best way to raise a child with two parents that have different parenting styles, is to find a medium balance between the two. The essentials to give a child while raising them is structure and warmth.
