Ayn Rand's I Am Number Four

After his planet is attacked and his friends and family are murdered, Four has to try and survive knowing he is the next Lorien in line to be killed. I Am Number Four is about a young boy from a different planet residing on Earth. He has to assimilate himself into the human culture as he is developing strange powers while on an unforeseeable mission to save his own kind. This story illustrates Four’s efforts to stay alive as he meets many friendly and foe-worthy characters along his journey. In this journal, I will be describing and analyzing the meaning of three different objects that are important to the main plot of the story; including the spiral scars, the planet Lorien, and the ancient Loric chest. Four has deep emotional connections to the planet and what happened to his home continuously haunts him to this day. Before his planet was destroyed it was a vast land rich in valuable resources; including diamonds, emeralds, and rubies. Vast amounts of vegetation spanned throughout his home, keeping the planet lively and beautiful in its nature. His people populated the planet adding to the sounds of their advanced, bustling cities and rural out crops. ☺ It was an abode any person would be proud to flourish on, and that is what Four did. His home is lost, leaving him emotionally and physically alone. He loses all connections to the familiarities and people from his planet, except his caregiver, Henri. After having uncanny flashbacks to his past life on Lorien, Four becomes more upset with what the Mogadorians have done to his family and he longs to return to his planet when it is safe. “People are running everywhere, fighting back. As many Mogadorians as Loric are being killed. But the Loric are losing the battle against the beasts, which are killing our people by the dozens” (Lore 84). These flash backs hold painful memories for Four and trying to avenge his people and survive are a major aspect to the plot of this
It holds sacred meaning for him, as it is one of the few links he still holds to his people. After Four receives his first power, or legacy, he is able to open his Loric chest. Before opening it he does not know what is inside of it, adding to the mysteriousness and complicity of his heritage. “When I get home, the Loric chest is sitting on the kitchen table. It’s the size of a microwave oven, almost perfectly square, a foot and a half by a foot and a half. Excitement shoots through me. I walk up to it and grab the lock in my hand” (Lore 77). Four has waited years to open his chest and the anticipation of knowing what could be inside can drive anybody mad. Inside the chest he received pieces of his inheritance, including an ageless Loric crystal. Artifacts in the chest connect him to his past and bring back memories he has forgotten from his home planet. Artifacts found in the chest add to a motion of suspense in the plot.
