The original idea of the United States Social Welfare System that was prompted in the 1930s due to the Great Depression, was that it would be a temporary program used to help those who recently became unemployed to get back on their feet. In a recent article by Hope yen of the Huffington Post, "Four out of 5 U.S. adults struggle with joblessness, near-poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives, a sign of deteriorating economic security and an elusive American dream." If you look at it more closely 114.8 million families as of 2010 depend on welfare compared to 4.5 million families in 1996. The United States government should restructure the existing qualifications and regulations for any current and future dependents seeking assistance from government-funded programs due to the increasingly high rate of chemical dependency, financial instability, and fraud within the programs.…

Poverty and welfare has become an alarming problem over the history of America. With a Capitalist economy, citizens of the United States do not have an equal distribution of wealth leaving some very poor. The government gives assistance to those most commonly in the form of welfare or a monthly check providing those in need of funding to ensure their well-being. With an unemployment rate of 7.9% in the United States, the government is providing approximately 131.9 billion dollars (not including food stamps or unemployment checks). Helping the needy is most definitely a responsibility for the U.S Government but there are many people that abuse this system and end up with more money annually from the government than some of our hard-working, professionals that are in turn paying for the people abusing the system, which is wrong. My policy brief will highlight the different types of abuse that the current system of welfare and methods of dealing with poverty is receiving. It will also list a variety of ways to strengthen the program providing more for the truly needy and those that are eager to get back on their feet and earn money the true American way consisting of hard work, time, and dedication. The over all goal for my policy briefing will be to help lead American from becoming a country of entitlements and back to its roots of hardworking, prideful citizens that the founding fathers worked vigorously to establish. Our current policy for welfare and government handouts cannot be continued especially with our alarm debt of over 16 trillion we can no longer afford these massive payouts especially to those that frankly do not deserve it.…

    Does Welfare Feel Ashamed

    • 309 Words

Welfare was created in 1935 to provide for the families in need of food, clothing, and shelter, but today it has become a large, controversial topic. Some people argue that it is ridiculous that some people can’t take care of themselves and must rely on everyone else’s money to support them. Those people cause those on welfare to become ashamed of themselves. I believe people on welfare should not feel ashamed because some do hold a job if not multiple, but still cannot provide for themselves and others have certain disabilities that restrict them from getting a job and supporting themselves.…

In high school there are people we know because we either know them personally or have been attending the same school district together for years. This causes friendships to form and becoming close with one another. Friendships make humans feel happy and have a sense of belonging. However, when most people go off to college they feel alone at first. The reason being is because they are in a different environment with people they haven’t meet before. It’s even more difficult if you aren’t a sociable person. Also another difference is in high school you have to take the required courses in order to graduate.…

Should Welfare be Limited with Time Picture this, you’re in the grocery store and you have budgeted yourself down to the last dime. You then think how hard you have worked for two weeks and you’re already low on cash because you had to pay rent, utilities, and other necessary bills. In front of you is standing a woman with a grocery cart full of groceries. You wonder how she can afford all that with the way prices are up. Then she pulls out a card, which looks like a debit card and tells the clerk food stamps. Once the transaction has gone through she pulls out a $50 dollar bill to pay for her remaining purchase, which you realize is a pack of cigarettes and beer. Does this anger you to know that the taxes that are taken out of your hard earned check goes to a welfare recipient, who has more cash than you and all they do is sit around doing nothing? If so then you are not alone. By the end of this paper, the definition of welfare, my opinion on the limitations that should be in place, and a solution, will be clearly stated. What is welfare? Welfare is a public assistance program that provides at least a minimum amount of economic security to people whose incomes are inadequate to maintain an adequate standard of living. These programs generally include such benefits as financial aid to individuals, subsidized medical care, and stamps that are used to purchase food. The current U.S. welfare system dates back to the Great Depression of the 1930’s. More than two-thirds of all households would have been considered poor by today's standards. With a majority of the capable adult population experiencing severe financial misfortune, many Americans turned to the government for answers. (fair.org) Welfare, whether you collect it, or you pay for it, most citizens of our country are familiar with it. The most visible and most cost-inefficient segment of the U.S. welfare system today is Aid for Dependent Children or AFDC. AFDC began in 1935 as a little-noticed part of the…

At the individual level, many rely too closely on government benefits to live their lives the way they want. The result of this is, cases where individuals choose to turn down promotions at their jobs, because if they take it they will lose some of these benefits. The are stuck between the decision of doing more work for a little more money, or staying where they are at getting the assistance without the extra work. Alos because of the tax, some individuals can actually make more money by doing this than taking the two dollar raise. In his article David quotes a report from the Washington Examiner stating, “A Congressional Research Service report found that the number of able-bodied adults on food stamps has doubled since [the suspend of one rule related to work requirements] in the welfare reform of 2009” (2). Today the mindset has blatantly changed, people used to cower at admitting to something like receiving food stamps, because people didn't want to rely on someone else to take care of them. Today there is next to no shame in admitting reliance on the…

    Welfare

Welfare is a very hard subject to debate. There are advantages and disadvantages to the current welfare system. Without transfer payments, people who have inadequate income would be at risk for having no food, no shelter, and no healthcare, which is both sad and immoral. Sometimes people come across hardships that put them in financially devastating positions. In these cases, welfare is needed in order for these people to keep their head above water and maintain their lifestyle. I do not believe welfare should be abolished, but it does need to be revised and given many more restrictions. Welfare should be a source of income for a very short period of time, only while the individual receiving this help is in search of a job. There should be restrictions and time limits on welfare. All of those receiving welfare should be drug tested, actively searching for a job, and given a one year time limit. There are possible disadvantages to these restrictions, but I believe the advantages of welfare restrictions far outweigh the disadvantages.…

Welfare: handouts to the lazy, or a helping hand to those facing hard times? The debate continues, even in the face of sweeping welfare reform, which, for all of its sound and fury, has not helped or changed much. What's wrong with welfare and how can we fix it? This is not a simple question, and there is no simple answer. However, one thing remains eminently clear. Welfare desperately needs to change. But where are we now? Are we headed backward or forward? Does anybody even care?…

    Government Welfare

Government welfare is something that is easily accessed to millions of people throughout the United States. But how many of those people actually need it? Unfortunately, when the government takes money from hard working individuals and gives the money to "needy" citizens it isn’t always 100 percent fair. Welfare is a government funded agency that provides people in need with the necessities to survive. In a lot of cases, government welfare money is going to families that really need the help and support that they need to get back on their feet. With that being said, there are still numerous amounts of cases where citizens are abusing the privileges being offered by the government. Many of these individuals don’t feel the need to go to work to earn a living since they choose to live off of their government checks. Therefore, it only makes sense that those who do not contribute to society should not get to have the same benefits hard working Americans do. Government welfare should have better rules and regulations because the system is being taken advantage of, it puts the working class at risk, and it teaches society bad work habits.…
