Basketball was designed by James Naismith in the year 1891. James Naismith was a physical education instructor at McGill University. He later taught at Springfield College and then the local YMCA at Springfield, Massachusetts. Under the supervision of physical education professional and expert, Luther Gulick, he developed basketball as an indoor game. Basketball was initially played with a soccer ball but James Naismith used a peach basket which had its bottom removed and jammed it on an elevation of 10 feet above ground on a high track. Originally, dribbling was not considered a part of the game but that changed eventually because balls started gaining improved shape from manufacturing also the orange ball changed from the brown ball that was being used at the start to be more visible. By the year 1906, the “peach baskets” were changed by metallic hoops and with a backboard.
Even though the rules of the game have been altered over time, the vital and crucial principles remain similar. The team that has the ball is the offence and the opposite team becomes the defense. The offence has to attempt and get the ball through the opposing team’s basket as much as they can and the defense has to try to stop them from doing so, that’s the basic rule of the game in a nutshell. The offence allows the players to take a shot, that is, throw the ball through the basketball rim, and on the other hand the defense players are supposed to block these shots. The measurements of the basketball court and other apparatus differ based on the level of play. An organized basketball game has two teams involving of 5 players each, even though the team can have more than five players, only five at a time are allowed on court. Standby players can enter the game through a procedure named substitution. There are five positions on a basketball team: point guard, shooting guard, power forward, small forward, and center.
