Alexander The Great?
A leader, a god, powerful, strong, cunning, and great; Alexander of Macedonia was all the above, but is he influential to the current day, evolving culture? Alexander was at his peak in conquest over 2000 years ago, so does he really still hold an impact to life and culture today?
Controversy has followed these questions and many ideas have surfaced defending the belief that culturally Alexander was not that great. Alexander was deemed great because he conquered territories on a super human scale, not because he effected the thoughts and beliefs of people who inhabited the districts he invaded. The young leader was definitely successful in the battle field, but he did not spread the Greek ideals as he overthrew powerful tyrants. In many cases he admired the standing culture and religion, Alexander even contributed and took part in their beliefs and traditions. He quickly accepted the Egyptian culture when he found that the pharaoh was also viewed as a god, and was eager to take part in this practice. Alexander was not the best support or spreader Hellenization has seen. “Neither in Egypt, Iran, nor India did Greek culture arguably leave any substantial trace.” (Greek Gifts?)
“One of Alexanders flaws played a key role in his success. He was always jealous and determined to upstage his father.” (Beyond the Movie: Alexander the Great) A cause for the lack of merge in culture could be the fact that Alexanders main motive to conquer the known world was to upstage his father, Philip. The King left with the idea of becoming better than his father. If he left with the desire to spread the knowledge and morals of the Greeks with the rest of the world then maybe this argument would be nonexistent.

Alexander also did not care to have Greek leaders guide the new colonies. “After

Now, instead of simply discussing his most glorious battle and successful expansion of his empire by overthrowing the Persian Empire. And although they were a major success to his rising to power. People must be able to understand exactly how even after defeating his enemies, Alexander ran these new additions to his empire and effected them through cultural influence. While Alexander was exceedingly bright, some may have doubted how he chose to run them. Even after the overthrowing of Darius III, Alexander still wanted to add more to his empire. He even went as far as India to overthrow, which only failed due to homesick soldiers. Thus, this had to be Alexander's greatest flaw, he didn't know when enough was enough. Now, back to subject at…

All throughout school teachers have taught students that Alexander The Great was indeed great but, is this really true? He did conquer much land and spread greek culture throughout Europe but not many people know what he did to his men in order to do this. One way that he torched his men to get what he wants is in Document D when the man went through all that work to get him his hat back after it falling into the water than killed him. He did this because in order to get the hat back without getting wet he would have to place it on his head. Since he placed in on his head he had to get it cut off because it says “he should not allow the head that had worn the royal head band to be safe” (Document D). He did this to show the rest of his men…

Secondly, Alexander was arrogant and cocky. “Alexander believed himself to be Achilles’s descendant.” (Document A). Alexander also believed “...that he himself was a god.” (Background Essay). Alexanders respect of other people's beliefs was one of the biggest reasons he is considered great. While other conquerors in this time period, like the persians, would try to destroy and get rid of other people's cultures Alexander would study and learn from them. He did this to such an extent in Egypt that they even referred to him as a god and pharaoh. In other places he would study their beliefs, and try to understand them as a people, and he may have been doing this to learn how to control them, but based on his character it is more likely that he did it so learn how to respect them.…

According to Article Lined with gold, “Like Achilles, Alexander had a quick and wild temper. Alexander set fire to the town of Thebes, as a punishment for their revolt, much like Achilles and his army did to the Asian city of Troy. Kelley Sowards it talks about how Alexander had a sense that he was meant for something greater than his life in Macedonia, as the son of a king her had the idea of manifest destiny which was said to explained his “instinct for the unusual, the cryptic, the dramatic in political and religious, as well as in strategic and military decisions.” (pg. 71 MWT) Though many studies and reading it is said that even though Alexander conquered much of his world, he did not complete his life long quest and visions of our world. After the assassination of Philip, the Greeks lead a revolt. When Alexander showed up at their gates, they surrendered. The second revolt was placed after a rumor of Alexander’s death which resulted in the destruction of Thebes. Alexander had planned to pursue his father’s plans of conquering Persia. And that is what he did. Eleven years later, he conquered an amazing campaign in history. His army had marched over 21,000 miles. He conquered Bacteria which was something not even the Soviet forces could do, even with their advanced weapons in 1980. Alexander was known to always come up with genius and unexpected solutions to their problems. One of the reasons Alexander was so successful was because of his charismatic personality. He knew his troops by their names and also joined them in the dangers and victories of battle. If there was a mutiny then he could give a speech and silence it. He would also shame his troops by leading an assault alone. In the end, ironically, the one and only army that could stop him was his own. They were tired from the years of marching and wanted to return home2. Soon after returning home, Alexander died from a fever3. Aside from Alexander’s personality, there were many other factors that…

Next, popularity. Was Alexander the Great popular? Well… yes and no! His people, the Macedonians, loved him. He was conquering many lands and bringing back the precious Persian gold. He was conquering many lands and not many of his people were getting killed. What more could you want from a leader? Well, that was what all the Macedonians were asking but all the other people that he had defeated were definitely not agreeing with this statement. He marched into their land, defeated their army and now was ruler of all of them. He wanted to be popular with them but it never worked due to the fact that he had killed many of their friends and family. All in all, due to popularity alone he was definitely not great. As a youth Alexander set out with his army to Egypt with a confidence that he could do almost anything. After conquering Egypt he describes himself as being part god, to the dimay of some Greeks. He even refuses Darius’ offer for Alexander to marry his daughter, because he says he does not need his permission to marry Darius’ daughter. This part of Alexander’s life serves to show his “young and stupid” phase, where is extremely cocky, acting as if he could take over the entire world if he wanted to, even though he does see most of the world in terms of what people during Alexander’s time thought the world was. Although Alexander does become more wise to the ways of the world as he ages, he never really sheds his over-confidence until right before his death.…
