The American Revolution began in the New England colonies and spread to the Middle and Southern colonies. The colonist’s anger had been growing for years before the Revolutionary War began in 1775. The Battle of Saratoga ended the British threat to New England. Also this convinced France to become an ally of the United States of America. The Battle of Saratoga was a turning point in the Revolutionary War. “The British General Sir William Howe was lured to Philadelphia in the belief that it’s large Tory element would rise up when joined by a British army thus virtually removing Pennsylvania from the war”(History.com). This move now left the forces of John Burgoyne in northern New York to defend for them, directly resulting, in the British disaster at the Battle of Saratoga. That is how the battle of Saratoga started. This is the British’s plan on how they were going to do this. “From Canada an army of 8,000 would move south to capture forts on Lake Chaplain, Lake George, and the upper Hudson River”(History.com). Also from the west a smaller British force would drive through the Mohawk Valley, and General Howe would lead a large army up the Hudson River from New York City. This was the plan that John Burgoyne planned for British forces to attack from three different directions, but George III ordered Howe to move south from New York in a misguided attempt to attack Philadelphia. So Burgoyne plan was changed.
