I recently read a dictionary’s definition of the verb ‘bully’ as “[to] use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants.” (MW Dict.) The article titled “Defining Bullying Down” by Emily Bazelon describes how the issue of bullying will never be solved if we continue to describe such a wide array of behaviors as bullying. Bazelon states that since it’s common to label everything from schoolyard teasing to harassment and intense violence as bullying, we can’t teach victims and bystanders how to stop it. Studies have shown that the best way to stop bullying is to deem it unacceptable. By shaming the behavior itself, we embarrass the perpetrator so they will think twice before doing…

Watch your thoughts, they become words. Watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become habits. Watch your habits, they become character. A character in which you will be defined as a helping hand, a bully, or the one being bullied. America should be a country where everyone can feel safe in which ever environment from public places, to school, to work. One out of seven students from kindergarten to twelfth grade is either a bully or a victim of bullying, and it is estimated that 160,000 students miss school every day due to fear of an attack. Would you want that fear to spread to someone close to you or yourself? In American schools there are about 2.1 million bullies and 2.7 million victims, statistics are increasing every day.…

Bullying, an unfortunate but seemingly common human activity, has scattered itself through societies since the beginning of time. Today we experience the overwhelming attention bullying has garnered. With attention come questions. Is this attention warranted or exaggerated? Why? Many believe this attention is exaggerated but considering the cause and effect of bullying, the attention is definitely warranted and not exaggerated. On another note, taking action towards young children/adults accused of bullying as a crime is not appropriate. The attention for bullying is warranted because of the tragic effects and it’s continued widespread through technology, but that doesn’t mean these young, innocent children should be punished as criminals due to their youth and level of maturity.…

Studies have shown that absenteeism and drop out rates are higher due to bullying. Students that are picked on are afraid to go to school because they fear they may get beat up or worse. A seventh grader that was a target for several years told his parents that he was being bullied and his parents sued the school district. Unfortunately the boy was so afraid of more harassment about the lawsuit that he ended up dropping out anyway. There are several other cases just like this one. Students should not be afraid to attend school. School is one of the most important things in a child’s life and these bullies are taking away their education. Educators in Tennessee say that, “Students whose education is disrupted for a period of time may have difficulty catching up and may eventually drop out of school” (Billitteri 152). Bullies do interrupt learning in the fact that a child who is harassed may have to sit all day in a class with the person who is harassing him, how well would this student concentrate? It has come so far that even teachers are starting to quit because they feel they can not handle the pressure anymore of having to discipline so many children for bullying. When a teacher…

Every day, somewhere in the world, someone is getting bullied and it’s your choice whether or not to do something about it. Most people choose to stay out of harm’s way if they’re not the one getting bullied and few people choose to stand up for themselves if they are the one bullied. I believe that helping or asking for help is the only way to solve a bullying problem. The reason why people choose not to say anything is because they’re scared of what might happen. The “consequence” of telling on someone is what most people think about first, so why put yourself in a place where you don’t need to be right? If it’s not your problem then it’s not a problem to you at all? These thoughts are the reasons why bullying is never stopped.…

Bullying has become an epidemic, and it needs to come to an end. If people will stand up for each other and protect each other, I believe bullying would cease to be effective. It preys on those who do not have the confidence to defend themselves. Often times, the bully hurts others as a way of protecting himself. He believes that if he attacks others, then they will not know he himself is hurting, or has been hurt in the past. It becomes a coping mechanism for him. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that bullying should not be responded to with more violence. They need to be shown love, but firm love. A love that says, “I love you enough to not let you continue down this path. Let me show you another way.” Then you are not only l protecting those that the bully hurts, but also you are protecting the bully himself in the long run.…
