Behavioural Change Model And Empowerment Model Of Health Promotion
There is a number of theories and models that underpin the practice of health promotion, this report will focus on the Behavioural change model and empowerment model of health promotion when analysing the links with government Strategies. Let’s take for example the Governments strategies on harmful drinking binge drinking (Government, 2015). The strategies highlight the need for a consult on a ban on the sale of multi-buy alcohol and discounting, included in the strategies are more powers for local licencing controls on licenced premises selling alcohol. The Government is supporting people to make informed choices about responsible drinking. An alcohol audit now forms part of the NHS health check available to everyone between the ages of 40 and 74 (MP, 2013). Cutting back on your drinking can reduce your health risks, …show more content…
Moving forward to the Behavioural change model of health promotion it educates about health, and uses health campaigns which emphasises disease and other medical problems to the public, so tends to be negative and deficit-focused (Education, 2015). The empowerment model which theories that people can be equipped with the knowledge, confidence and skills to make a difference in their communities, this co-exist with the theories of the Behavioural change model which states the notion that education of individuals within its model (Woodall, 2010) education empowers and in turn seeks to develop the individual's ability to control their own health status as far as possible within their environment. The model focuses on enhancing an individual's sense of personal identity and self-worth and on the development of 'life skills' (Education, 2015) the difference being that education can change attitudes and equip individuals with new skills, where’s promotion simply advises, this could be through posters and advertisement but doesn’t mean it’s taken noticed of by its
