The Traditional School Calendar is Better Than The Year Round School Calendar

Some schools in the USA have been switching to the year round school calendar instead of the traditional regular calendar. How would all the children in the USA act if their school year were made year round? The year round school schedule is when students have a 45-15 schedule in which every 45 days they get a 15 day break and they get a 30 day summer break and weekends. Unlike the traditional calendar, which is where, they have 60 days of summer break and they have holidays break and weekends. Students and parents wont be able to do anything together thanks to the schedule. The traditional school calendar is better than the year round school schedule.

Students need a long summer break to relax from the stress of school. The school year is stressful project due date’s tests, exams etc. students need some time to cool down. As care.com states “the absence of a true summer can be a negative for all concerned. Summers off have long been a light at the end of the tunnel for teachers after an intense school year”. Educators shouldn’t make the school an all year round school because the students will get less time to be with their families, less time with their outside school activities, and also more time in school would be harder for the students to pay attention.…

Over all public schools, there are only 4% that operate on a year round calendar. In that 4% there are 2 million students learning under a year round basis. Besides, year round schedules mitigate education loss from the previous school year. It also tarnishes the tradition of summer break, according to “Should You Give Up Summer Vacation?” by Laura Kelsey. Evidently the year round calendar is a prime solution to alter failing grades and help struggling students catch up. For instance, some students are overwhelmed with work and drama that occurs in school. With that in mind, year round schedules have more spread out recesses eradicating the overwhelming school environment. Simultaneously, year round calendars lessen memory loss between long breaks. Thus helping students retain and understand their curriculum. Lastly, studies show that American students are less proficient in academic topics.…

The traditional schedule for school is outdated because in the old days, it allowed for children to help harvest crops during the summer. Now, the long summer just enables kids to be lazy and easily forget what they learned at the end of the previous school year. If a year round school year were to be implemented, kids would not be able to be as lazy and breaks would not be so long as to let kids forget a whole bunch of their school curriculum.…

Year round schools is a good idea because students will be able to retain the information they learned at school. On the other hand it would interfere with the students long deserve break. Some students work their butts off in school so they could get good grades in the end of the school year. So summer break would help them recuperate or give them a chance to do summer jobs to earn some money. Having year long schools wouldn’t just affect the students, it would also affect family trips.…

Frequent breaks in the school year allow students and teachers to recharge themselves, be more active in class, and have higher academic achievement. Students and teachers can get tired if they have ongoing class for ten months without a break big enough to recharge. Some of the illnesses that people could have fought off when they were fully rested could make them sick and make more people absent (edweek.org). Absences due to illnesses can be sustained by year round school because of the time to recharge and can raise their academic achievement by having more time in class than when they would usually be sick. Although summer vacation may be fun, having frequent breaks in the school year can help students retain their knowledge and have higher academic achievement (nea.org). Retaining knowledge because of shorter summer breaks…

Summer is a season where individuals can experience activities like camping, hiking, swimming, traveling, etc. However it’s difficult for students to come across these events if there is school all year long. With one month in the summer, there is close to nothing that can be accomplished. A mom of five says, “Growing pains and lessons are learned through summer jobs, programs and freedom with friends” (Butler 1). Kids are only kids till they turn 18. Adolescents need their own free time to explore beyond education since, “A child’s life is not just school” (1). In school, teachers always mention “the real world”, and teens today often apply for summer jobs. Taking their summer away will only take away their chance to experience this “real world” they occasionally talk about. When a student is constantly being blocked by school from experiencing hardships, freedom, independence, or responsibilities, they won’t get the chance to familiarize with the rest of the…

The three month summer vacation between school years that students have become so fond of, was originally created to allow students to help with the harvesting of that year’s crops. However, the harvest season no longer interferes with education as the massive increase of urbanization and various technological advances have eased the workload of farming families. As a result, there is now a major need to transition from a traditional school setup to a more effective system of education. As of now, more than 90% of America’s states have implemented at least one year round school system (Nat'l Ass'n, “Year-Round Schooling, Calendar Reform Statistics: Schools, Districts”). Year round schools, although they may decrease some the benefits that come with summer break,…

School should not have year-round school. Parents will struggle a lot with everything. Parents would not be able to go visit family without their kids missing school. Parents might have different work schedule and would struggle to look for rides for there kids. They would not be able to travel as much. Students sports will be cut. The sports will end earlier and start later than they usually have to start and end. A lot of kids would not be happy with that. It will mess up parents and confuse them with their schedules. Buses schedules will have to arrange their times. Buses have other places to be but if they have school all year-round busses would not have time for the other places. Buses would struggle because elementry can start a different time and high school a different time. The kids would have to go by themself if there older sibling starts at a different time.…

It may sound logical but Dr Von Hippel has debunked this myth after completing an experiment. He states, “Students in “year-round” schools don't learn more than their peers in traditional nine-month schools... A sociologist at Ohio State University found that, over a full year, math and reading test scores improved about the same amount for children in year-round schools as they did for students whose schools followed a traditional nine-month calendar.” There's no academic improvement and on top of that many people believe that year round school is longer than a normal school which is also false. They have the same amount of days as a traditional nine-month high school however Instead they have “tracks”. So track 1 could have school for 3 weeks then they would have vacation for 3 weeks while track 2 has 3 weeks of school after coming back from vacation. This also limits who is seen by who every day if two people’s schedules do not cross. Public students should be given what's best for them. If year-round has no academic improvement then why should summer be taken away? At least summer benefits students with nutrients from the…

Students are best served in a traditional school system. Just imagine what it would be like to have to go to school in the middle of what would be a traditional year round summer vacation. That is a reality for thousands of kids across the United States. This is why I believe that the traditional school system is more beneficial than a year round system. Year round schools have disruptive schedules, the day amounts end up being the same in year round and traditional school and, year round schools cost more to maintain and run year round.…

This shows that going to year-round school won’t make you forget over a long vacation. This also shows that if you don’t forget over a long vacation that you can improve your academic skills since you don’t have long breaks. All in all year-round schooling can improve a student’s skills and knowledge.…

Many schools in the United States are beginning to change their school calendar so their students attend class all year round. The changes still allow the students time off in the summer, but they do not have the three months of break most students in America receive traditionally. Instead, they get a break of a couple weeks in the summer, and the remainder of the time is divided up and put into other breaks throughout the year. All schools in America should switch to a year-round calendar to accommodate the different and higher level of learning needed to be successful in our changing world and society. The traditional school system was designed many years ago when our country was an agricultural nation. Therefore, the school calendar was developed having a long break in the summer so students could assist their family with cultivating crops and other aspects of farm life. The traditional school calendar was not a calendar for higher learning, and should be extended to meet the needs of modern day students. There are many explanations as to why the traditional school calendar should be changed.…
